The deadline for conference expansion is coming up if schools want to begin life in a new home as early as 2012. So where does the Big East stand in getting to the desired ten-football membership it originally sought out?

TCU is already lined up to begin competing in the conference in 2012 after one more season in the Mountain West Conference. Villanova still appears to be on hold and the talk of actually moving to 12 football members is growing some legs. Army and Navy all of a sudden have become legitimate possibilities for the conference as football-only members in the league.

Throw in the fact that the Big East rejected an extension offer from ESPN worth an estimated $1 billion over the next nine years and you have to get a sense that Big East commissioner John Marinato is up to something pretty big here, right?

interesting article but my question is this: Do Army and Navy really have any national appeal outside of the annual Army/Navy game? I still think that having the markets of Houston and Orlando makes more sense especially when you consider adding schools from Florida and Texas...

I am interested to see what happens with the Big East expansion. I know from first hand UCF's facilities are first class and I have read Houston is right there with them...it just makes sense to me to add those two schools.

With Houston you have TCU which could turn into a rivalry and then of course you have USF and UCF which I know students and alumni from both schools WANT that every year but USF seems to avoid it at all costs.

Either way I still believe those are the Big East's best options not 2 military academies that probably will never be able to compete at a national level.

Wow didn't mean to make this a long drawn out post...It was a good write up and interesting perspective, but I am just not sure of the Army/Navy situation

JBock, official FlameFans Big East homer here...

I don't really see Navy joining. I think UCF would be a great addition, it would also solidify the UCF-USF rivalry.

To tell you to truth, I don't see the Big East expanding. I don't see how it could. I also don't see why in the world it needs to. They've already got 17 teams for basketball, and even I as an official homer can recognize that.

If they do add one more school for football, let it be UCF, and that's it.

So is the Big East's goal to become even more mediocre than they already are?
