Embattled coach Jim Tressel has resigned from Ohio State.

"After meeting with university officials, we agreed that it is in the best interest of Ohio State that I resign as head football coach," Tressel said in a statement Monday morning. "The appreciation that Ellen and I have for the Buckeye Nation is immeasurable."

Assistant coach Luke Fickell, who had been named to fill in for Tressel during the first five games of the 2011 season in which he was to be suspended, will take over as the interim head coach, Ohio State said in the news release.

It will be interesting to see what happens next for Tressel & OSU. Tressel will likely end up as a studio analyst for a year until high profile openings appear elsewhere. Ohio State now will have a difficult time getting a top notch coach under these circumstances just a couple of months before training camp. And it will be interesting to see if any of their top shelf signees choose to bolt.

OSU trying to do damage control. They were slowing in letting Tressel go.

I'd be surprised if Tressel does TV this fall. I think he's going to stay out of sight and out of mind. I don't think the bucks are going to lose many recruits. 1 or 2 tops. They are going to be fine. I'm more interested to see what kind of sanctions the NCAA hands down.

The much-hyped SI article this evening just showed more of the same type of allegations we had already heard. But it did a great job of laying out the track record of Tressel that never matched up with his public persona.

This is yet another example of hipocrisy by a high profile Christian that makes it tougher for the rest of us. :banghead

As for NCAA sanctions, I would expect them to come down decisively on both OSU and Tressel. The coach will have a tough time ever landing a major gig ever again. And the media attention is essentially forcing the hand of the NCAA to do something.

They'll still revere him in Buckeye land. Heck, Hayes slugged a player, never apologized to him, and got to 'dot the I' less than ten years later.

Two words if the NCAA would grow a pair.....death penalty.

Yep, Bowling Green & Idaho State are going to get hammered for this.

I agree Sly. I get tired of these self righteous, high profile people who constantly bring shame to Christianity by getting caught in scandal. It just doesn't do us any favors.

I've never liked the bucks, but you hate to see any program go down like this. OSU being good is good for college football. I'm really interested to see who they will hire next year to lead the program. Everyone keeps thinking high profile but Tressel wasn't a high profile hire. People seem to forget that.

I have a feeling that the NCAA might go easy on Ohio State just because it's Ohio State. SMU, doesn't have the following that Ohio State does (let's face it, OSU brings in so much revenue).

My prediction, OSU will receive punishment simular to USC.
