Coastal Carolina basketball under NCAA investigation over alleged illegal benefits
Coastal Carolina, which has been enjoying national success in basketball, football and baseball, now finds itself facing questions about alleged NCAA violations.
The school confirmed in a statement released Friday that it was working with the NCAA regarding an inquiry into its men's basketball program:
Coastal Carolina University is and has been fully cooperating with the NCAA in its current inquiry. Allegations were brought to the University's attention in late summer of 2010. At that time, President David DeCenzo immediately directed Chief Operating Officer Edgar Dyer and University Counsel Tim Meacham to self report the allegations to the NCAA on behalf of the University.
NCAA's rules of ethical conduct prohibit anyone at Coastal Carolina University from providing further comment until the inquiry is completed.
The New York Times, in a story posted on its website Thursday, reported that the focus is leading scorer Desmond Holloway, who has been suspended by the school while awaiting a decision from the NCAA on whether he can be reinstated. It is normal procedure to sit an athlete if there is a possible NCAA issue, and then apply for reinstatement.

The men's coach is Cliff Ellis, whose previous head coaching stops included Auburn and Clemson. Coastal (25-4) had a 22-game winning streak but the combination of suspensions and injuries has left the roster at eight players and contributed to a two-game losing streak. The baseball team is ranked 20th in the preseason USA TODAY/ESPN coaches poll. And the football team made the Championship Subdivision playoffs. School spokewoman Martha Hunn confirmed to USA TODAY that only the basketball program is under investigation.
The school is located in Conway, S.C., not far from Myrtle Beach.
Ellis has eight transfers on his roster, according to the Times. One of them, Mike Holmes, a transfer from South Carolina, was dismissed after an altercation with a teammate, according to the paper.
The paper quotes former player Marcus Macellari, who said his scholarship was taken away because Ellis signed too many players, as saying he made a formal complaint to the university after he lost his scholarship and said that players had received illegal benefits.
