RADFORD, Va. —
Brad Greenberg, Radford University's men's basketball coach, has been suspended for the rest of the regular season because of NCAA violations.
Greenberg will sit out the last four games of the year, after being sidelined by the school in the midst of the ongoing NCAA investigation.
Assistant Rick Hall will coach the team to finish up what has been a trying year.

The Highlanders head coach's punishment is the result of NCAA violations.
RADFORD -- Radford University has suspended men’s basketball coach Brad Greenberg for the last four regular-season games for NCAA violations tied to impermissible team travel and associated extra benefits for ineligible player Masse Doumbe.
“Once we learned of the violations, we immediately contacted the Big South Conference and NCAA offices and imposed what we believe are appropriate sanctions at this time,” Radford athletic director Robert Lineburg said in a statement. “A thorough investigation of the violations is currently being conducted by the NCAA.”

Not much of a bombshell (this time). Just NCAA pettiness really. One of their foreign players is not cleared yet and they took him on the road with the team over semester break so he didn't have to spend the entire time on a deserted campus. Most people would call it compassion. The NCAA calls it a violation.

It may be an act of compassion, but we've left tennis players on campus during breaks if they weren't eligible. As insane and petty as the rule is, it still must be followed until changed.

Oh, I agree. It's just sort of ironic that with all the suspicion surrounding the recruiting of Big Art, Laz and others, this is what they get him for.

I think they are calling this a suspension, but I'm calling it a vacation for Greenberg. Come on, would you want to watch Radford play either?

He's lucky it's in regards to this and not the other recruiting practices like others have mentioned on here.

The problem is that now they have recorded violations and if the others do come to light then they fall into repeat offender with a lack of institutional control.

Looks like the men's tennis coach was also involved in transporting the player:

interesting article there: the way I read it, the AD (Lineburg) says Greenberg is still lying about the whole mess
wanna bet Greenberg is gone by May?
Ray Cox, Roanoke.com wrote: When Greenberg knew that he would be suspended, he wrote a letter to a university supporter explaining what happened. The letter provided fresh details of the case.
The letter was written on university athletic department letterhead to Ben Lincoln of Charlotte, N.C., and dated Feb. 11. The letter was included as an attachment to an e-mail Lincoln sent The Roanoke Times. In the e-mail, Lincoln was identified as managing partner of Redwood Wealth Management in Charlotte. He described himself as "a supporter of Radford basketball and Coach Greenberg."
In Greenberg's letter to Lincoln, the coach discussed the violations as well as providing additional previously undisclosed details.
"I committed an NCAA violation on two occasions by allowing Masse Doumbe to travel with the Radford University men's basketball team during Thanksgiving and winter break," Greenberg wrote. "I am suspended by the school for these games and withgoing [sic] a week's salary." ...
... "I was very concerned about leaving Masse alone on campus during Thanksgiving and winter break when school was out of session," Greenberg continued. "However, I know I was in error and regret my decision. I apologize to you, the team and the Radford administration."
Lineburg disputed Greenberg's version of events that led to the suspension.
"That is inaccurate," said Lineburg, adding he does not know Lincoln. "There were multiple trips between Nov. 19 and Dec. 23, certainly more than two."

I hope he's not gone. I want him to stay a few more years and do much more damage to the program

not a good sign. AD-speak for "working on a buy-out" ?

I doubt a buyout is necessary. This would certainly fall into the "grounds for termination" clause in any coach's contract.

true- but if a negotiated severence package is cheaper than a protracted legal battle, everybody wins...

I love how their message board is acting like the RU athletic department is blowing this out of proportion. Chances are there are MUCH bigger infractions known by the school....it's kind of like when you fire a coach "because it goes beyond wins and losses." RU wouldnt want to lose a coach like Brad that has taken their program to where it is....but they would want to lose him if it might hit the fan as to how they got there.

This has been known for weeks, why did they wait until now to suspend him?

Wow, these people on their message board are insane:
Let's win the next 4 remaining regular season games and welcome back Coach Greenberg in time for the Big South Tournament. It's not insane to think we can win the tourney and we can point to this suspension as the catalyst that started our late season turnaround.

Because they picked up the rock to see what else the NCAA will find now that the program will be under the microscope of the investigation....that's my guess.

My thoughts exactly...they do know that they cannot make the tournament now even if they win out right?
