Cool. Maybe USA Today will decide to do a story on USC-Upstate next. Or maybe SE Missouri State...

Sorry its just random. Coastal does good in one sport and all the sudden somebody worships them.

One sport? CCU was one game away from the CWS last year. CCU went to the football playoffs. CCU has the nation's second-longest basketball winning streak. The recognition is well deserved.

You obviously didn't look at the article. It's talking about how they're dominating football, basketball, and baseball right now.

whoa, jon. you just made me go back and re-read the article. nowhere does it even suggest that they're dominating football. it mentions getting the first at-large bid and the first auto-bid and how football has changed the university as a whole....all of that is very factual.

When I said dominating, I meant being in first place in the three men's sports.

well just being in first place in those three sports doesnt mean your necessarily dominating. Now the Chants certainly are dominating in baseball. they are the class of the conference. Are they dominating football...eh...not of late. they did dominate in the latter part of the Karcher era but Liberty really has had the Chants number up until this year (we beat them rather soundly their last two trips to Lynchburg). Basketball there really wasnt much to crow about up until last year (I mean other than in the late 80s and early 90s)

I never said that the article said that Coastal was dominating football. Never said it once. When I said "one sport", I was referencing baseball.

If you're a Coastal fan, sure there's every reason to be proud that your teams are doing well. My only question is what makes USA Today think they're so special? That's my point.

wow, this thread is the poster child for how things get twisted all around.

neither the original poster (me), nor the usa today writer ever used the word domination...superjon put those words into the writer's story when he replied to lang.

maybe it was a bad idea to share this on here altogether.

Usually, yeah.

Any kind of discussion that falls short of praising LU comes under fire from a bunch of whining and complaining.

CCU has been kicking our butt lately, and glad to see them getting some pub. Good for the conference, as well.

I was going to put "bickering" but thought it sounded too much like something BJ would say.

And you come in right on cue and pick my words apart so you don't have to agree with me, since apparently that's the last thing on earth you want to do. ;-)

And also, I think Jon was responding to Bock, not me.

I sensed that too. Which was blatantly out of context to what I was saying.

Coastal's earned the publicity, I have no beef with it.

Now as someone who tends to jump on anyone who says anytihng critical re: LU I will go on record and say that offering criticism isnt necessarily a bad thing...but you cant just criticize and completely forget all the good that is happening...and offering some positive pub re: Coastal isnt a bad thing coastalalum

agreed bj...and for once a national pub wrote a story on a big south team without trying to take some angle about coastal's unique mascot name or some other silly storyline. this was a serious story about the overall success of the athletic program.

and my sincerest apologies to SJ if i followed the progression of replies out of line.

Coastal finished THIRD in Quiz Bowl, behind UNCA at 2nd, and LU, who won the championship, going undefeated (5-0) in Conway 2 Saturdays ago.

Head to head, LU beat Coastal 340-50.

Let the record show that in the three sports profiled, a certain university in Virginia is deal on their heals or alongside. I think this type of story is a good thing for all of us in the Big South. I don't think any of us would be surprised to see us atop at least 2 of those 3 sports next year ... or sooner.
