14 years as head coach at Gardner-Webb
87-66 record with Runnin’ Bulldogs
Two-time Big South Coach of the Year
2002 & 2003 Big South Conference championships
Finished 2002 season (9-1) ranked in the top 25 of three I-AA polls
Led GWU in transition from NCAA Div. II to FCS status
31 GWU players earned All-America recognition during Patton’s tenure
Previously was head coach at Mars Hill and at North Greenville (S.C.); former Arena Football League coach of the Charlotte Rage and Charlotte Storm with the American Football Association
Steve Patton, who recently completed his 14th season at the helm of the Runnin’ Bulldogs, and his staff will not be retained. Patton’s 2010 squad posted a 4-7 record, the fewest victories for a single season in his tenure. His teams went 87-66 during his career at Gardner-Webb, forging a 51-25 mark from 1997-2003.
Players were told in a meeting late Thursday, but the news had already leaked out over the internet.
