There have been a number of Gulf War vets playing for major programs the past couple of years. One started for the national champion Longhorns last year. Its cool to see these mature guys who are grounded with life experience get around these often-pampered & immature 18-year-olds. It can't help but rub off.
And no, I'm not saying all 18-year-old football players meet the above description. But I can tell you from firsthand experience that many of them in major programs do.

I think there was some guy who played for South Carolina a couple years back under Holtz who grabbed a lot of headlines who had a similar story.

The guy from SC played last year under Spurrier. I think the player even got on the field once.

And Weinke was a washed out baseball guy not a military vet.
