Longwood has its sight set on the Big South Conference, which includes VMI, Liberty and Radford. Big South Commissioner Kyle Kallander in an e-mail said that the league does not identify prospective members, and added, "I will say that our membership committee is in general discussions about priorities and strategic direction."
And yes, according to the article they are still trying to woo Big South members into letting them in.

They can have our spot when we eventually get out. Until then they can focus elsewhere.

longwood would be better off moving back down to D2 as far as athletic competitiveness is concerned.

You should probably clarify what you mean.

The last time I asked Kallander about Longwood, he said "tell them to add football."

This has zero chance of happening unless someone bolts from the conference.

Why did they even move up to DI without having secured an invite somewhere? That was stupid.

And we paid the penalty for it, Phoenix. You would think the folks just down 460 from us would have learned a lesson or two from our journey in the wilderness. Apparently not.

Because they are a deadend D1 program. At least they could win some games when they were a D2.

A lot of teams that aren't women's bball have lost to Longwood in the past couple of years (from LU and other Big South schools). Most of their teams would be middle of the pack or better in the Big South.
