I'm hearing there is a press conference live on ESPN at 7:30. Aparently it is to announce the dismissal of as many as 10 players from the football team.

The school needs to respond very seriously to all of this or it could seriously hurt their academic reputation.

Remember, the academic stuff was started by the university, not the NCAA. It actually bodes well for the university to make a big deal out of ANY alleged cheating.

From what I've heard:

Marvin will be out because of the agent contact. Brown & Burney out because of the tutor stuff. When I say out, they seem to be suggesting 1 -3 games.

The tutor stuff has been way overblown. The tutor was officially working for the university before Davis was hired. The office recommended her to Davis as a tutor/nanny for his son, not the other way around. The alleged conduct happened AFTER she left the university. It was said that what she did was not actually writing papers or providing exam answers, but getting too involved in proofreading & making suggestions for grammar, re-write, etc...

The university was made aware of the academic scandal by the NCAA from what was found during the agent gate investigation. Don't think just because a University is doing its investigation about the cheating the University is ok. FSU reported their cheating scandal to the NCAA and self imposed players to miss three to four games including a bowl game. Bowden lost 12 victories during the time this scandal happened, UNC could lose victories from last year if the cheating happened during that time period.
Also UNC has a honor code where anyone cheating could be booted out of the University. The damage to UNC has already been done.

Would you say damage was done to dook's academic reputation regarding Ricky Price & Greg Newton? They were both caught cheating, suspended from school temporarily, & then allowed back to the athletic programs.

My point is, no one really knows exactly how bad the punish is going to be, yet. It could be big, like the FSU punishment, or it could equal the punishment handed out to those mentioned above.

Either way UNC reputation of an academic instituion above others is damaged for good.

If I am not mistaken Duke lost their starting QBs a couple of years ago, dismissed from the school for plagarism.

I don't think it is, yet. It all depends on how they handle the situation.

If players are found guilty & given the same treatment as any other student, then no, UNC's reputation will not take a hit. They will be perceived as doing what it takes to keep their standards regardless of the type of students involved.

If players are found guilty & receive special treatment simply because they are athletes, then yes, I can see their reputation taking a hit.

Students, at any school, can cheat despite the best efforts of a coaching staff, academic advisors, professors, etc...it's all in how the school handles it/what excuses are made and if it becomes a pattern.

You're a Carolina hater and have said that on multiple occasions. Obviously you're going to say that. Even Duke fans admit that Carolina's academic standing is very, very good. This is a crappy thing to happen and it was stupid to let it happen but to think this takes down an entire school is completely and ridiculously stupid.

Please quote me where I ever said I am a carolina hater or either offer an apology. Why would I hate UNC, we own them in football, what is our record something like 13-1. Now I make no bones I an a UF hater.

Well aware of the sensationalizing going on the in the media. I have no doubt that I've read more, heard more, & talked about this more than you.

The comparison with Tiger is laughable. The man had a pattern of adultery, not one big incident. The situation at UNC has not shown itself to be a pattern. Heck, no one outside of those involved even knows what really went on, yet.

Is UNC a bastion of purity above all others? No. But, they also are not synonymous with multiple alleged scandals like some other schools. In that respect, they are in the upper echelon of schools.

Just announced
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. ----- University of North Carolina head coach Butch Davis has suspended defensive tackle Marvin Austin indefinitely.

“This decision is NOT a result of the ongoing NCAA review,” says Davis. “Marvin has violated team rules and has neglected his responsibilities to the team.”

Austin will not play Saturday vs. LSU.

Don't really trust ESPN or major sports networks most of the time. Go straight to the source.

No.....InsideCarolina.com is their version of FlameFans.com. It's not their official website, but you can find out information faster sometimes.

It's the Scout.com network. I'm sure you're familiar with it.

Perhaps there are those that would prefer Raleigh's newspaper:

or maybe something from Raleigh's news station:

UNC knew what it was doing when it brought in Butch Davis. They knew the baggage he brings in but they apparently deemed it worthwhile to raise the profile of the program. In retrospect, I have a feeling they may now have a different opinion since Butch hasn't exactly turned the Heels into a powerhouse. Everybody has hammered me before on here for saying it but it is similar to UK with Cal. Is it worth it. Obviously UK is nowhere near the academic institution of UNC and Wildcat fans could care less if anyone is cheating as long as the Big Blue are winning. Is Carolina cool with becoming the new Kentucky?
