MEAC might ditch automatic playoff bid for bowl, NSU says
The Legacy Bowl would match the regular-season champions from the FCS's two historically black college conferences: the MEAC and the Southwestern Athletic Conference.

This would leave one more spot for a CAA team! Wooohooo!

I think the odds are greater that the Pioneer would get the auto bid.
Incidentally for those who wondered what yesterday's random reference in a post to South Carolina State & Florida A&M joining the Big South, now you can connect the dots.

And Delaware State, as well.

Does FAMU want to join the Big South? If we add 3 more schools, that will put the league with 14 teams, unless some of the non-football members want to join the A-Sun.

FAMU is interesting. They tried to step up to I-A a few years back with disastrous results before returning to the MEAC. They clearly haven't been pleased with the MEAC for a long time and they have limited other options inside FCS for a new home. The Big South would make some sense. In fact, it could be that FAMU & SC State consider sticking with MEAC for all sports outside of football and become affiliate members of the Big South in the one sport that is a bone of contention. Normally that wouldn't be an option but the fact that the MEAC is pulling out of the playoffs would seem to make it a viable excuse.

You don't want FAMU in the Big South. They are having and have had finanical issues.etc in the past. At one time they were on top of the world with their finances. But have had problems and issues legally with their finances.

As a matter of fact they had problem with accrediation, was put on probation for six months for failing to comply with several core requirements. They were removed from probation in 2008

It was their ill-fated step up to I-A that put them in the trouble. I think they'd make a nice addition to the Big South for football purposes with the caveat that they are required to bring the band to Lynchburg.

We're talking about the Big South. Just about anyone would be a nice addition.

They were in trouble before going to 1-A according to this article.

Also the next article shows the school having problems back in the 90s and this was in 2007

Currently FAMU and FSU are having issues over sharing the College of Engineering between the two schools.

And the FAMU athletics has finally come off NCAA probation this year.
http://www.examiner.com/x-27014-Black-C ... -probation
And in 2004
The Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference plans to strip Florida A&M of its 2000 and 2001 football titles and nine other championships for 196 NCAA rules violations, most dealing with academic eligibility.
That is more violations the UF had under Charlie Pell in the 80s or 90s.
Growing up in Florida I just know a little bit more about FAMU. The school use to play against BCC every year in Tampa until some blacks either got arrested or complained about the way merchants in the old Tampa Bay Mall acted to them after the game was over and the crowd took over the mall and its parking area. Game was moved to Orlando I believe after that incident. I think the game was called the Orange Blossom Classic.

It’s been over a week since South Carolina State University gave its official ‘response’ to the Legacy Bowl speculation.
Since releasing a statement which, for the most part, came across as political in stating both arguments about the proposed contest pitting the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference and Southwestern Athletic Conference champions without taking a side, the administration has kept a silent, low-key profile.

I'm a fan of both Howard and Hampton. It's a shame the MEAC has to consider this ridiculous proposal. Just because the SWAC is content on not competing in the FCS playoffs does not mean the MEAC need to do it as well. Truth be told, the lack of the auto-bid has hurt the SWAC considerably in recruiting. Outside of the Bayou classic that Grambling and Southern has every year, I cannot name another SWAC game of importance to me.
What the MEAC and SWAC should do is give the champions of both conferences the choice of placing their champion in either the FCS playoffs OR the Legacy Bowl. Worst case scenario would be the #2 team of each conference playing in the game. If they can't accommodate that for both conferences, the MEAC and SWAC should tell them no thanks.
If I was KK, I would have South Carolina St, Delaware St, Hampton and FAMU on speed dial. If the Big South could take those schools as football-only members, it would be a big coup for the Big South.

Agreed, but would the SoCon want any/all of them?

I seriously doubt the Furmans & Woffords have any interest in having SC State in their little circle.

I agree, this would hurt the MEAC. Also, SWAC schools honestly can't even compete against their own FCS counterparts. That's why they rarely try.

Sad when conferences start to not care/respect the FCS National Championship
