GRANTS - The distance between Lynchburg, Va., and Grants spans nearly 2,000 miles. But that didn't keep new Grants High School boys' soccer coach Kenneth Ham from snaring a job that he said will be a perfect fit for he and his new wife.
GHS athletic director Gerald Horacek announced the hiring recently, and what was clear to him from his interactions with Ham is that even at a ripe young age - he just turned 24 - the new soccer coach has had strong mentoring along the way.
“His concept of how to develop a team is really strong for a person fresh out of college,” Horacek told the Beacon. “And I'm not just talking Xs and Os. He understands the mentality of getting all kids to believe in themselves.”
Ham currently coaches at Liberty Christian Academy, an offshoot of Liberty University, which perhaps is most famous to New Mexicans for its basketball coach, former University of New Mexico leader Richie McKay. McKay has since moved on to Virginia University as an assistant, but Ham counts his experience at LCA as key to his philosophy as a player and coach.
