Thoughts? SB in cold-weather city? Good or bad?

For those of us watching from our living rooms? Great!

For corporate America and the teams involved? Ridiculously stupid.

Do we really want weather conditions to be a primary factor in the outcome of a game? Its different than homefield advantage which has to be earned. But can you imagine what a mess this past Super Bowl would have been with a pair of dome teams who throw the ball trying to play on Jersey tundra?

YES! - You can play a division championship with crazy weather, so why not a Superbowl?

There are 2 words that I've never seen in the same sentence. But it is the Garden State, right?

At least that's what they put on their license plates. In February, tundra would probably be an accurate description.

The difference between the Super Bowl and divisional playoffs is those conditions were earned on the field by home teams. In the Super Bowl those subpar conditions are being forced on teams perhaps unfairly. In essence the cold weather teams who are climatized will have a distinct advantage over warm weather teams strictly by geography. Everyone has an even playing field in warm weather but location would give an unfair advantage to certain teams who practice regularly in nasty conditions.

I think people are making too big of a deal about the weather. They play the Super Bowl in Florida, where there's always a huge potential for rain. No one complains about that, even though heavy rain can have more impact than cold weather.

For the past 10 years teams have always played it safe in the Super Bowl anyways. They scale back their play-calling and basically play not to lose, so teams don't take advantage of the good weather. I don't think the cold will have negative effects on the game.

And they need to stop with the whole "NY/NJ" thing. It's New Jersey. They will not be playing in the city.

Couple thoughts -

Where to stay in East Rutherford? Theres a 12 story stack of MAERSK shipping containers that can hold everyone.

With so much public funding going into these stadiums, I think it's about time the NFL starts going to colder cities. The economic impact of a Super Bowl shouldn't be given to only the warm city teams. In this case, IIRC the new Meadowlands was 100% privately financed. But if Minnesota per say puts up $600 Mil for an outdoor stadium, why should they be denied that opportunity?

If everyone is so worried about weather affecting the outcome of the game, why are we even playing outdoors?

Your skirt is really showing here. GB and tundra go together, lets not exaggerate and say Northern NJ is anywhere near as cold.

Lets do some actual research: Northern NJ weather for the month of feb.

There hasn't been an overnight low below 7 degrees No. NJ in nearly 15 years. Average low is 25. With averge high being around freezing.

Now GB gets down well into the single digits every night with many nights exceeding 20 below zero. That's quite a difference.

So by your own statement a teamwhose home field is in a cold weather area and they have earned home field advantage throughout the playoffs, now must travel and play in temps 50 degrees warmer is not a disadvantage?

East Rutherford actually averages a bit more precipitation for the months of January and February than Miami does.

As a resident of Miami, I (as well as my lawn) can attest that February brings little rain to the area. Not to mention, Miami was told after the 2007 Super Bowl (the only time in 10 where Miami hosted that it did rain) that if they wanted to have a better chance of hosting a Super Bowl they needed to build a roof for Sun Life (Formerly Dolphin) Stadium to prevent inclement weather from affecting the game.

I personal love the idea of playing the SB every once in a while in a northern city especially with the given circumstances (relatively new stadium and its NYC). And at the end of the day its FOOTBALL it’s meant to be played outside whatever the weather is like. It also gives a chance to a northern team to get to play in their home stadium (they have to earn it but they usually don’t even get the chance).

The Lions could have played in their own stadium. If you want a Super Bowl up north, build a roof (retractable or otherwise).

Sorry, my skirt is showing again.

I love reading Vic Ketchum (I'm a Jags fan) but I agree with him that games where there is snowfall get higher ratings on average than non-snowy games. A Super Bowl in my lifetime with snow would be awesome! This creates that potential.

There is just something special about a football game in the snow. BUT, if there is no snow for this SB, then it will be lame. Think about it. Ridiculously cold (guaranteed wind) with no snow. Very unattractive.

Personally I like the possibility of it snowing during a Super Bowl. I mean it'd look cool and c'mon who hasn't had fun playing football in the snow? I'm sure the players really wouldn't mind either.

this has no effect on the average person like you and me...I could care less where the game is played...as long as its played...weather can always be a factor if played outside...such is life...its football...its so ridiculous to me hearing people actually saying they actually think this is a bad idea....
