LaShawn Merritt, the Olympic 400-meter gold medalist and reigning world champion, has accepted a provisional suspension for the use of a banned substance, the runner said today in a statement.

The suspension came after Merritt tested positive three times over a four-month period between October and January. He said the positive test was triggered by ingredients in an over-the-counter male-enhancement product that he used off and on after the 2009 outdoor track season had ended. He learned of the positive test results in March.

"To know that I've tested positive as a result of product that I used for personal reasons is extremely difficult to wrap my hands around,"
