what a hilarious turn of events. Hopefully the ripple effect will end soon, though. I hate to see rumors of "Skip Holtz to X".

there is apperently a Riot at UT over this... and part of me doesnt blame them. he just pulled a Ritchie McKay.
but at the same time... a riot? really?? i love football but its not worth destruction of your own stinkin' campus over.

from a UT basketball player describing the whole thing. http://twitter.com/Swiperboy

Do I remember there being a connection to Air Force and Rocco or am I imagining that.

I think they were thinking about firing Calhoun to get Rocco.

Well, it's better than David Cutcliffe to UT.

UT's coaching staff is unchanged. Tennessee tried but couldn't convince an assistant at UT that the head coaching job in the SEC was a step up.

Oh, please. That UT assistant was Will Muschamp who is contractually designated as Mack Brown's coach-in-waiting at Texas. It would have actually cost him money to take the job in Knoxville. I'm surprised that Tennessee even bothered looking up his number.

He makes $900k and was allegedly being offered $3-3.5M by the Vols. And in case you hadn't heard, his boss just re-upped for another 5 years at $5M/yr. So it likely will be awhile before he gets his shot in Austin.

You're ignoring the possible -- nay, likely -- buyout language in his contract. Not to mention that being a head coach-in-waiting is turning out to be to a job where that guy has a lot more leverage than even the head coach does. You don't have to look any further than Maryland and the Tony Franklin deal to realize that.

In any event, Mack will be 60 in two years. I think he'll either hang it up or get the Bobby Bowden treatment before the end of that extension.

Except Mack, much like Joe Paterno, is actually fielding a top 10 team every single year... Until texas has multiple non top 25 years no reason to believe either of those will occur in the next 5 years.

I agree. I don't think people would have minded Bowden being ancient if his team stayed out of trouble and was in the top 5-10 every year. Bowden had seemingly lost control of the entire operation, and it was time to go. Brown has that team running like a well-oiled machine, and doesn't look like it's going to be slowing down soon. Lots of talent in Austin.

With the shine being lost in L.A., Baton Rouge & Gainesville this recruiting class signing in February for the Horns is going to be epic.

Keep in mind that the next five years are huge pay increases. He'll essentially make a ton more money now than he did in the rest of his career combined. It wasn't that long ago he was just making a $1M at UT. So the financial incentives are in place to stick around. Of course Darrell Royal's influence on Mack to retire early remains.
