USC punishes itself for rules violations

USC has self-imposed sanctions on its men's basketball program for NCAA rules violations, including a ban on postseason competition at the end of this season, a reduction of scholarships and vacating all of its wins from 2007-08.

The university said the sanctions resulted from an internal investigation that found NCAA rules violations related to O.J. Mayo, who played for the Trojans during the 2007-2008 season. Mayo is now with the NBA's Memphis Grizzlies.

As was pointed out (I think) on PTI yesterday... This is basically USC trying to make sure the football program doesn't get in any more trouble and they are willing to sacrifice their basketball program to ensure that. I mean -- they have a decent squad this year (and a young one too) but no post-season for them.

Michael Garrett is an embarrassment to that school, the Pac-10, and collegiate athletics in general.

I feel bad for the current USC players that had nothing to do with Mayo and the former coach. I'd imagine a number of them will be looking for a way out ASAP.

It's funny, I remember the 3 or 4 years of Mayo's recruitment, EVERYBODY knew whoever got him was going to have some kind of violation on their hands. It was inevitable. It's not just their dumb former coach's fault either. They all just sat back and enjoyed the publicity.

It would have happened with any team who took him on, Mayo just found one dumb enough to take him on.

So can they and when will they start inflicting a little pain on the players who know rules are being violated?

It appears the day of reckoning has nearly arrived ...

I keep trying to figure out why Pete Carrol left USC, but nothing is coming to me right now.
