Hot Duke prospect gets too-warm welcome

DURHAM Duke's students apparently welcomed basketball prospect Kyrie Irving a bit too enthusiastically last weekend during his official visit.

Student-made signs welcoming Irving were removed by Duke's NCAA compliance personnel to prevent the school from running afoul of NCAA rules, Duke associate athletics director Jon Jackson confirmed.
The interpretation requires a school that becomes aware of such activity to take steps to stop it. That's why Duke removed signs and also posted requests on Duke-related Internet message boards asking students to quit hanging signs.
I think they resemble the US in a sense that there's just a lot of useless bureaucracy that doesn't really make any practical sense. Why on earth could a student not make a sign? Can anybody give me a scenario where that would violate anything on this page?

Yeah, I'm not sure what to make of this. It seems to me that the NCAA is almost a joke sometimes.

They have the NCAA Compliance note stickied on Duke's scout.com page.

Yeah, normally I always take shots at dook, but this should not be an issue. It should be applauded that students even know who they are recruiting, regardless of the school. The NCAA can make a quick decision about something as trivial as this, but not the Maggette issue? :dontgetit

When my good friend James McAdoo stepped into the Dean Dome for a visit, the entire crowd present was chanting "McAdoo! McAdoo! McAdoo!" I guess that should be a violation too  ridiculous

This aspect of the NCAA rule sees reactionary to me. They are very big on a school not publicly announcing the presence of a recruit on campus, so they lump student signs, et. al., in with the whole shebang.
