Marlins changing name...

I was reading the posts on combination football baseball stadiums and when I went to look that up I found this interesting tidbit in an article on multi-purpose stadiums:
The Florida Marlins currently are constructing a new retractable roof stadium in Miami and plan to begin playing there in 2012. At that time, the team name will change to Miami Marlins.

Yeah, that isn't going over to well down here. A bulk of the fans that actually attend the games come from Broward and Palm Beach Counties. Right now, Dolphin / Landshark Stadium is right on the Miami-Dade and Broward county line but the new stadium is going in Little Havana which is 30 minutes south and not really a good neighborhood. There is also no parking. The City of Miami Comission is funding the new stadium with money they don't have so they view that as justification to change the name.

Oh, good. Because they certainly were packing out the old stadium.

The Marlins are actually arguing the old "If you build it, they will come" line. They say the reason people aren't coming to the games is because of where thye play. They say that if the Marlins get a new stadium, they will automatically pack it out from day one.

The reason they aren't coming is its HOT HUMID and RAINS during 50% + home games.

You are correct about the hot and humid, but it actually doesn't rain as much as you would think. It rains almost everyday here, but usually around the late afternoon. It typically has very little effect on the games. I will say though, Sunday afternoon games are brutal. There just isn't any fan loyalty down here for any of the teams. When they do well, people come, but when they are not doing so well, people stay away. If the Marlins make the playoffs (which is a big if but not out of the question) the stands will fill up. Until that happens, they will continue to bring in 10,000 on a good day.

Great Scott! Back to the Future 2 is coming true! All we need is the Marlins to switch to the American League and the Cubs are destined to win the World Series in 2015!
(My team is garbage. Stuff like this makes me feel warm inside.)

If you build it, they will come... isn't that what they said in Atlanta?

Even still, rebuilding it hasn't gotten Atlantians out to a playoff game.

You obviously weren't here in Atl at those games. Trust me. we were there. maybe less so than we were in the 90's but we were there.

Well, here are the attendance figures from the last two playoff games in Turner Field - 41,000 and 40,000.
In 1999, the opening playoff game? 39,000.
Capacity is 50,000+, by the way.
Yes, the attendance figures were better in the early - mid-90s -- but that was pre Turner Field (although yes, as expected for new parks, the first two years in Turner Field saw sellouts).
But that proves my point. Atlanta built it, and they didn't come. Well, 20% of the seating capacity didn't come. I've heard it's because Turner Field is in a bad locale in Atlanta, but I don't have the research to back that anecdote up. Still... 20% unused seats at a playoff game is rather... sad.
