BERLIN – The prospect of Tiger Woods competing for an Olympic gold medal may be moving closer to becoming reality.

Golf, along with rugby sevens, look to be the favorites among the sports being considered Thursday for inclusion in the 2016 Summer Games by the International Olympic Committee.

The IOC executive board will select two sports from a proposed list of seven, which also includes baseball, softball, squash, karate and roller sports. The 15-member board will submit two sports for ratification in a vote of the full 106-member IOC assembly in Copenhagen in October.

"It will be a long and difficult discussion," IOC board member Gerhard Heiberg told The Associated Press. "I think there will be different opinions. We hope to be able to make a unanimous decision, but it will be hard to find a common denominator."

I hate it, hate it, how football, baseball, and golf aren't sports, but men's synchronized diving is... although from what I've heard, Rocketfan is strangely intrigued by that event.

My biggest beef with the Olympics is that you'll give out gold medals for every concievable iteration of swimming (butterfly, medley, freestyle, backstroke... and if you do another lap doing those, it's another gold medal), but you get ONE medal for two weeks of basketball?

I mean, it makes as much sense to expand the basketball competition to make 3-on-3 half court, or 1-on-1, or a three-point shooting contest, as medal sports.

That being said, golf and rugby should be in the Olympics. As should cricket, American football, baseball (and softball), lacrosse, bowling, and auto racing.

Have they ever had golf in the Olympics before? Rugby answer: the United States won the Rugby gold medal in 1920 and 1924. 1924 was the last time rugby was played in the Olympics.
