very likely out for the season. if tmac doesn't stay healthy, then luis scola could be the best play in houston next year, and even then he might be the best given how crappy tmac played when he was actually able to play.

The Rockets are indeed a mess right now. You build your franchise around two maxed out contracts and when their services are removed from the equation (while still counted against the cap) you have a recipe for disaster.
There are a zillion trade scenarios still being bandied about. T-Mac's contract expires next summer so that is attractive to some teams.

See, I would argue that the Rockets are not in nearly as bad of shape as you'd imagine. I believe they have the best GM in the game (Daryl Morey, who was brought in after the McGrady acquisition).
Two notes: The Rockets handled themselves fine after McGrady went down. From the time that he announced that he was going to have season-ending surgery, the Rockets went something like 20-8 and took the Lakers to Game 7 of the conference semi-finals.
Also, McGrady's contract is being paid (mostly) by insurance companies right now, meaning that a team could take him on and save money -- and then, as you just mentioned, let him walk after the 2010 season. It wouldn't surprise me if he's dealt to a team looking for that one more piece (or packaged in a three-team deal) and get someone like an Amare Stoudemire in return that could help fill the void left by Yao.

There have been a dozen or so Amare attempts by the Rox with no luck yet.
And this past season's late run was sprearheaded by Artest who bolted for the Lake Show.
I like Aaron Brooks and Carl Landry a great deal and both were outstanding Morey draft selections. And landing Scola was another brilliant move. All are nice role players but there really isn't anyone to be the man right now.
