When guard Elliot Williams abruptly left Duke last month to transfer to the University of Memphis and closer to home to deal with a family illness, the Blue Devils' staff and the father of Class of 2010 commitment Andre Dawkins started to discuss the possibility of an early arrival for the 6-4 guard, who is ranked as the No. 10 player in his class in the ESPNU 100.

The program, after all, was down to only two guards on its entire roster: Jon Scheyer and Nolan Smith. They were the only players shorter than 6-7 on the team.

So, according to a source with direct knowledge of the situation, Andre's father (also named Andre) told the Duke staff to have the university's academic adviser look at Dawkins' transcript to see if an early admission was possible.

Well, I will be honest about that part- they do need guards. However, I do think that Nolan and Jon are awesome (I know, I know...). But, look what Liberty did without fowards...23-12 ain't bad (and we all know that they could've done better on Senior Night...).

you have to compare apples to apples, being w/o guards is way tougher than being w/o forwards.......you dont want your 6'9 PF trying to break a press or running the offense....

This has been in the works for a few weeks. As soon as Elliot transferred, Duke looked in to Dawkins enrolling early.

Don't jump the gun...

Andre Dawkins started hearing rumors about his son early Wednesday afternoon.

The news was that his son, also named Andre, was going to forgo his senior season at Atlantic Shores to play for Duke.

He even saw the news scrolling across ESPN.

“I don’t know where people got it from,” he said. “And once it got out, I started getting calls and text messages about it.”

Dawkins said the reports are “a bit premature,” but he confirmed the family is considering the possibility after viewing class credits and the NCAA Clearinghouse.

His son played his first year of high school basketball at Deep Creek, then played three seasons at Atlantic Shores, where he was named to the All-Tidewater team twice.

“As a result of the course work he’s taken and his success on the college entrance exams, it’s possible he could enroll at Duke in the fall,” his father said. “It’s something we’re definitely looking at, but nothing has … been set in stone.”

I think I know this kid! I used to play with a celebrity basketball team in DC as a Ringer (since I'm not a celeb). It was a team of radio DJs and personalities. Big Tigger from BET was on our team but the best players were a bunch of brothers named Dawkins, Another set of brothers named Benjamin along with me and a couple of my buddies. We were very good. We played the Redskins, Public Enemy, MTV Jock teams etc. We used to have a blast. One of those Dawkins boys was really, really good and his name was Andre. On the Radio he was a Friday night DJ named Dre D. I know he had a son that played and he was good in AAU ball a few years ago so I think this is the same kid I saw running around the Gym back then. That would be crazy if its him for me. Gotta do more investigating since I lost touch with the Radio Station team members a while back.
