Turkoglu opts out of contract/NBA Free Agency

Hedo Turkoglu’s(notes) run with the Orlando Magic appears to be over.
A day after the Magic acquired Vince Carter(notes) from the New Jersey Nets, Turkoglu’s agent said Friday that he sent a notice to Orlando earlier this week that his client will opt out of his contract to become a free agent. Agent Lon Babby said the Magic had made Turkoglu an initial offer that Orlando general manager Otis Smith described as a “jumping off point.”
But Carter’s acquisition signals the Magic are jumping in another direction.
Orlando’s payroll will likely dip into the luxury tax for the first time in franchise history, and Turkoglu is looking for a big payday after helping the Magic reach the NBA finals last season. He will be a free agent July 1.

I heard the Magic weren't going to be willing to go over the cap to sign Turkoglu, and if they are already over the cap now with the Carter trade, then I just don't see the Magic resigning Turkoglu.

turk is a decent player, but i honestly don't think he is worth as much as he would like to think...he is a liability on defense and he turns the ball over way too often...yes he has made some great plays in his career with the magic...but not enough to warrant over 10 mil a year

Wasn't he on one of the final Jordan Bulls teams? He's gotta be getting pretty old.

I agree with this. My main problem now with the Magic is figuring out where the Depth will come from. I figure that Anderson will start at the 4 and Lewis will move down to the 3... and pietrus could come in for VC, Rashard, or Anderson (and rashard would go back to the 4...), AJ backs up Jameer, and JJ backs up VC, but where is the rest of the depth? Gortat is probably gone, so no one to help out D12, and only one guy to back-up half the lineup...

Ryan Anderson isn't good enough to start for a playoff team, much less a contending team like the Magic. If he couldn't start ahead of Yi Jianlian for most of the season, how in the world is he going to start for the Magic? I think they would be better off starting pietrus and vince carter interchangeably at 2 and 3. That would leave Johnson, JJ, Anderson, and Foyle (he can still be servicable defensive center) as the backups. Basically, the magic are going to be in tough shape to replace a starter is an injury occurs.

Foyle is a free agent. We could bring him back for a ham sandwich, and I hope we do, but as of now he is not a member of the Orlando Magic, unless I missed them resigning him (and hoopshype must have missed it, too).
And Ryan Anderson was also a rookie. I don't know how much you could have expected from him. I think he'll have a chance to start. 7 points and 4 boards in 20 MPG isn't bad for a rookie in New Jersey. I think he's starting caliber.

i don't know if anderson will start or not...i think as of right now he probably wouldn't...he will have to improve in the off season...so for now probably the starter would be Howard, Lewis, Carter, Peaches, and Jameer...but all of that could change...who knows

Well, Stein at ESPN is saying that Gortat might be coming back if Hedo doesn't... any chance we see Gortat at the 4?

possibly...he has shown some promise, that is for sure...but i think anderson is actually better than gortat...but gortat is pretty good...and i am pretty sure the magic will resign him...as long as some team doesn't throw the mid level exception at him...which he has not yet earned in my opinion
Stan likes Lewis at the 4 I think...that is why I think it will take a little bit more to get Lewis back at the 3...which I think its much needed...it was seen in the finals..the magic just did not have enough quality big men
I have heard rumors of the Magic looking into Rasheed Walace with the vets min....not sure if he would go for that...but he might just win another ring...who knows

You're right. I was thinking of Toni Kukoc. All white people look the same to me.

He came into the league known as a sweet shooting big man. He shot 39.3% overall for the season and 41.7% on twos, that's pathetic at all positions, much less a PF, and definitely by all accounts bad for a guy known for his shooting ability. He struggled to start ahead of Yi Jianlian who quite possibly had an even worse season than Ryan Anderson. That means either Lawrence Frank is a complete idiot, or Ryan Anderson just isn't that good at all. I won't say he doesn't have any potential, but I don't think he is going to help out the Magic much at all right now.

That would be nice, I have to admit. Anderson and Sheed at the 4 would be a solid combination.

you're right...but I also think the Magic would be a better place for him to grow since he won't need to contribute very much

That's going to clog up the paint for Dwight Howard. It's hard to operate with two strictly low post players in the nba these days. None of the playoff teams really did it. It just doesn't really work in the NBA these days - it will either clog up the post for the real good post players or it will clog up the lane for the slashers - that's why Cleveland needs to get a shooting forward like they were saying on ESPN last night. Will it be completely ineffective? No, but will it put the Magic in the best position to succeed? I don't think so. Howard needs room to operate on the low post, he doesn't need another player getting in the way. Jameer and Vince need room to penetrate in the lane, having two guys on the low post will just give them less room to operate in.

he didn't need to contribute much in New Jersey either - they had the machine in Devin Harris, Vince Carter, Brook Lopez, Keyon Dooling, and yi Jianlian. They only needed him to be a role player coming off the bench, which isn't a particularly big role in my opinion.

He was drafted in 2000 by the Kings. He's only 30 years old.

Apparently Sheed, Brandon Bass, and McDyess are in the mix here. Sheed would be the best fit because he can stretch the floor and not take up Howard's space down low, McDyess can do that as well but isn't as talented as Sheed at this point. Bass wouldn't be a good fit, at least offensively, he is a low post, back to the basket guy, which really won't work that well alongside Howard, not unless they use Bass for the high pick and roll to keep him out of Howard's way.

I don't think Sheed is realistic...I don't think he will take the vets min. and that is all the magic can really offer...mcdyess is a good option and I think fairly realistic...
I agree with you on Bass...not a good fit

I think it's foolish for any NBA player to opt out of his contract in this market. Teams are trying to clear cap space for a run at the 2010 free agent class, and also trying to cut costs in this economy... especially a player such as Turkoglu, who is on the wrong side of 30.
I think if you have a guaranteed contract, you should ride that out for another year.

Welcome to the board, L4L. Turk clearly is taking a rather significant risk.
