So, new year for new prospects. Anyone else think the Nationals are going to be highjacked by pirates, er Scott Boras?

Sometimes you have to spend money to make money. I say the Nats should pony up.

I'm reading an article on Stephen Strasburg in ESPN the Mag now. I hate the term Can't miss prospect. I hope the kid keeps his cool through the hype. I also wish talent like that could end up on a real team.

People said the same thing about Longoria, Crawford, Upton, etc...

That guy isn't worth 50million. That is what Boras is demanding. Think about what you could get for 50 million in free agency...

Which is why I wouldn't draft him. Get the kid from UNC, Alex White, if you want a pitcher. He played against tougher competition and was/is pretty legit.

Dusty Ackley's about to become one of the richest people to ever come from Stokes County.

It's a tough business, but you have to give the guy what he wants. It's hard to find stud pitchers and there really isn't that many free agents dieing to go to Washington for any amount of money. They can cover his salary with the exposure, ticket sales and merchandise sales he will create.

Straburg could possibly be in the majors by the end of the year. It's unlikely, but it's been mentioned as a possibility.

Someone on ESPNRadio was saying that the Nats only offered Texiera a contract as a favor to Boras so it would drive up his price for the "big boys" to bid over...in return, Boras would give the Nats a "deal" on Strasburg. It will be interesting to see what kind of contract he ends up with.

If they give him upwards of $15 million, I can't see him NOT pitching for the Nats by the end of the season...especially if they plan on dealing Dunn like the rumors suggest. Without him in the lineup, the Nats would be completely unwatchable.

I don't know about that. It's not like Tex wouldn't have been subjected to a bidding war if the Nats weren't involved. The Red Sox were sweating him pretty badly, and the LA Angels and the Orioles were on his case, too. The Angels offered a $164 million deal. The Red Sox offered $168 million. The Yankees were going to trump that anyway they could.

As for Strasburg... He might not sign until mid-August, right before the deadline. He'll need to get some work in before heading to the majors, so he'll stop in the minors first.

After that, yeah, the rosters do expand to 40 in September. But! I don't see the Nationals promoting him to the bigs for a quick cup of coffee. If they did, it'll start his major league service time.

On the other hand, if they can deal without having Strasburgh in September, AND in April (and I think they can, trust me, a pennant is not in the balance), they can wait an extra year before he hits free agency and salary arbitration.

(Ohhh, I can't wait until I get to be a baseball GM.)
