Question for Basketball Refs

Is this a kick ball?
<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="
name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="
" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>
Here are the arguments on youtube.
Technically speaking the offense can kick the ball all they want, this isn't done obviously but if the ball hits the offensive players foot it is not a kick ball and therefore he can pass or dribble the ball of his foot. Which is why I'm still saying how is this illegal? A kick ball is only called when the defending team kicks the ball or in most cases, since the refs do not fully understand the full meaning of the rule, the ball just hits the defenders feet.
Explain how this is against the rules?
It's not a kick ball.
It could be called a travel but he gets the ball off before his feet touch the ground after he jumps.
it could be a double dribble but as you can easily see he kicks it with his foot some could call that a drop instead of a dribble.
so How is it illegal.
So what is the real call?

After watching my Nuggets roll through the playoffs so far, and all the horrible officiating I'm not sure the refs in the NBA are smart enough to figure this out either. I'd say it's a great play. I don't think they would.

My call would be double-dribble...in that he switches the ball from hand-to-hand..thereby ending his dribble...& he clearly has control when he puts the ball down.

A dribble is ball movement caused by a player in control who bats, pushes or taps the ball to the playing court once or several times.

Its definitely a violation.

A kicked ball situation only takes place when a defender kicks the ball. If an offensive player 'kicks' it, they must regain control.

I would have to go with scuzdriver. It doesn't, IMHO, seem to fit in the other categories.

I didnt even watch the video.... I just wanted to as B wall if he remembers the first game we ever called together,

I called a kick on the offense, and he told me there was no such thing. I havent forgotten that... thanks.

in highschool i lost my handle on the ball it almost went out and my soccer instinct kicked in and i kicked it and i reach out with my foot and kicked the ball to a teammate. i was called for kicking.

http://www.nba.com/analysis/rules_10.ht ... rticleList

Section V-Strike the Ball
a. A player shall not kick the ball or strike it with the fist.
b. Kicking the ball or striking it with any part of the leg is a violation when it is an intentional act. The ball accidentally striking the foot, the leg or fist is not a violation.
PENALTY:
(1) If the violation is by the offense, the ball is awarded to the opposing team at the sideline nearest the spot of the violation but no nearer to the base-line than the free throw line extended.

Ha, ha....I remember that. I should have been more clear, because if its blatant, like RM's above situation, you can call it. You know in order to have a kick ball, they have to intentionally kick it....not accidentally. 99 times out of 100, the offense doesn't mean to kick the ball because it puts them at a huge disadvantage....but that does leave the 1 time.....like RM. They are probably not going to kick the ball to pass it ahead....more so to save it from going out of bounds.

Plus, that was only my second year....so when it comes to my explanatory skills, I get a pass. 8)

Which is why I sit back & smile at some people who get all over refs during games. The average fan thinks he knows the rules....and they actually know less.

I think they average fan only gets mad when he disagrees with something that he does know is a rule. If I was at a game and a ref called fist punching, I wouldn't be like, "that's not a rule! you need glasses!"

I'm not a ref. I just love the game of basketball (but I can't play it; that is why I am a cheerleader and BTW I love cheering) and I played bball one year at my church. I know the rules and stuff. :D
