A little bit behind McKay and UVA

Pretty interesting story with the whole UVA coaching search and the thought of McKay joining the staff at UVA.
The Cavaliers then turned around 15 days later and announced the appointment of Bennett, who received a five-year pact that will pay him $1.7 million per year.

The contract also contained a $500,000 signing bonus and a $500,000 incentive bonus, payable at the end of five years. Depending on who paid Bennett’s $400,000 buyout to Washington State, which may have been covered by his UVa signing bonus, the head coaching position is going to cost the Cavaliers between $11.6 million and $12 million over five years.

That doesn’t count Bennett’s staff. In an unusual revelation at his April 1 news conference, Bennett named his first assistant coaching target, two-year Liberty head coach Ritchie McKay, whose resignation at Liberty hadn’t even gone public yet. Presumably, McKay did not come cheap.

According to some articles I have read, he made somewhere around $500,000 at New Mexico. http://www.abqtrib.com/news/2007/sep/20 ... s-1-milli/
Ritchie McKay

Title: Head men's basketball coach

Base salary: $175,000

Total compensation: $500,000, including up to $50,000 in incentives for positive academic performance and fielding a team competitive in the Mountain West Conference. It is unclear whether McKay earned those incentives during his final season at UNM.
I think they were still paying a large chunk of his salary while he was at Liberty.

Ritchie McKay was fired with three years left on his contract. But unlike McClain, McKay is getting payments that will add up to $580,000. McKay said his original contract stated that any salary after being fired would count against a new contract at a new school, but the school later rewrote the contract to remove that provision so as to not penalize McKay. So he gets his salary from UNM and Liberty.

"The good news for us was that it wasn't a lump sum," New Mexico athletic director Paul Krebs said. "There are quarterly payments for essentially a $190,000 a year impact to our budget. We've worked it into our budget.

"It's a concern and as we negotiate future contracts, we will have a greater sensitivity of any buyouts that might be in there. I don't want to throw dirt at Rudy [former UNM athletic director Rudy Davalos, who negotiated the McKay deal], but the contract wasn't in the best interest of the University of New Mexico."
