The Green Bay Packers have worked out Duke University basketball player Greg Paulus, according to a league source.

Paulus is a former high school Gatorade Football Player of the Year selection who was offered football scholarships to Notre Dame and the University of Miami, but chose to play basketball at Duke.

Paulus was a three-year starter for the Blue Devils at point guard who was once named second-team All-ACC. He was a third-team Academic All-American selection.

A four-time all-state football player in New York, Paulus is listed at 6′1″, 180 pounds on the Duke basketball roster.

Paulus set six New York state passing records, including career passing yards (11,763). He threw 152 touchdown passes in 45 career games, leading his high school to a 42-3 record with him under center.

Paulus was the starting quarterback in the U.S. Army All-American game, also garnering All-American football honors from Parade Magazine.

Paulus would be stupid not to pursue this. He is not going to play in the NBA. If he doesn't make an NFL roster, then he can try to play basketball overseas or just take his Duke degree and get on with his life.

A 6 foot QB that hasn't played in 4 years and has 0 experience beyond high school? Good luck.

Charlie Weiss cried every time he watched a dook basketball game.

Cassel still went through USC's program. He had plenty of snaps in practice. Paulus hasn't run a football drill in years.

Screw Paulus. Take Brock Smith.

I'm not predicting success for him, just saying that it is something he should try. He wouldn't be the first athlete to make it in the NFL without playing college football.

He was the #1 QB prospect in the country coming out of HS. He was probably stupid not to play football in college, but he did what he wanted to do, and I give him credit for that. There is no reason for him to compound his earlier mistake by not trying now with the sport he is obviously much better at.

"According to sources close to the situation, the former dook[sic] point guard was in Ann Arbor on Tuesday meeting with Michigan football coach Rich Rodriguez about the possibility of playing this season for the Wolverines.

The 6-foot-1 Paulus, who was the Gatorade National Player of the Year as a standout quarterback at Christian Brothers Academy in New York, has one year of eligibility left for football after playing four years of basketball at dook[sic]."

Now that's a much better idea. I thought you could only play 4 years though. I hope this works out for him.

4 years in one sport...and you have 5 to play 4...meaning he has one year of eligibility in any sport OTHER than hoops.

I just find it strange that he could play football for dook, but instead he's looking at another school.

Let's see...you have a chance to MAYBE be the QB for Michigan...or Duke? What would you choose?

If he's looking for playing time, to better showcase his game time skills.....maybe at Michigan or almost a sure thing at dook.....??

If the Michigan staff works him out and says he is good enough to actually play there, it would certainly be a much better launching pad to a pro career than Duke.

It really doesn't matter in the NFL if you were a starter, as much as where you played, especially at the QB position. If he were to get the #2 spot at Michigan (which is most likely the best outcome if he were to go to Michigan), he would still get better training and experience than Duke IMO. Starting QB at Duke, and getting KILLED will end his NFL career (or may even end his athletic career in general). Duke has made great strides lately, but their football program is not filled with too many great athletes. Michigan, although down the past few years, still brings in top 10-15 recruiting classes each year (ranked #10 on ESPN this year). He will have plenty of protection and weapons if he was able to crack the starting lineup, but if he can't, he will still be well prepared to tryout next spring for NFL teams.

IMO this whole thing will end up being a publicity stunt for Michigan. They will get a few more looks/coverage, and possibly an extra game on ESPN, but Paulus won't see the field much, if he goes to Michigan.

Duke's QB this year is actually one of the better QB's in the conference and definitely better than the QB's at Michigan. Right now they only have one healthy scholarship QB and he is an early-enrollee. He definitely has a better chance of playing at UM than at Duke.

Duke has a second year guy they like a lot. Michigan has no one anywhere close to taking the football on opening day. It's an easy choice.

I think this is a pretty good plan for Paulus. It's at the least a year to practice and get back into the game for a shot to try out for an NFL team the following year. He should have done this as soon as he got demoted last year.

Duke came out and said there is no chance that he could compete for the job and that he would have a better shot in the spread offense like Michigan has.

I still just dont see this happening. IMO he has a better chance playing BB over seas and making a living then being a 6 foot QB in the NFL
