CHARLOTTESVILLE—Have you lost your mind?

Maybe Ritchie McKay hasn’t heard those exact words, but he knows the decision he made last week puzzled many of his peers.

“In our profession, not many people go from head coach to assistant voluntarily,“ McKay said.

Yet that’s exactly what McKay, 43, has done. He left Liberty University, where he went 39-28 in two seasons as head man, for the University of Virginia, where he’ll be associate head coach under his friend Tony Bennett.

McKay said he and Bennett have talked often about the keys to succeeding in the ACC.

“I think a couple things that we agree on are A, you’ve got to guard. You’ve got to be tremendously sound defensively,

You would have never guessed that was the case at LU.

I will tell you we are to nice. The paper is to nice. Why do we need to be so nice?? Commitments mean nothing anymore. He is leaving, because he knew he was going to stink the next 3 years and get fired anyway.

Coach Soucie mentioned in TheSabre.com:

Jeff White, the beat writer who filed the above report, also has some more coaching news up on his blog today. White believes that Ritchie McKay (associate head coach), Jason Williford, Ron Sanchez, and likely Brad Soucie (director of basketball operations), who worked with McKay at Liberty, will make up the UVa coaching staff.
