Scott Cherry is leaving South Carolina after one season.

The top assistant to coach Darrin Horn has been hired as the coach at High Point, and will be introduced on Thursday, according to multiple sources.

Cherry could not be reached for comment. High Point, a Big South Conference school in North Carolina, has called a news conference for Thursday at 2 p.m. to introduce its coach.

Cherry, 37, came with Horn from Western Kentucky last year. The former North Carolina player was with Horn for one season at WKU, after two separate stints at George Mason, including one season on the staff that made the 2006 Final Four

Haha, he's bounced around a bit, but he's been with some winners. Hope it works out, but we all know it is an upgrade, even if he's a flop, because, well... ya know.

Can he do what Lundy couldn't and win in the Vines?

Cherry is a pretty good assistant coach, and I wouldn't be surprised if he can make that translate into being a good head coach. Heard an interview with Darrin Horn on the radio this afternoon and he said he expected an announcement within the next 24 hours, so I was expecting this one.

Who were some other candidates? Radio guy said 4 coaches were being considered, but the only person he mentioned was Ryan Odom, simply for the fact that some people in Columbia would be interested that Dave's son is looking to climb the coaching ladder.

Ryan Odom, G.G. Smith, and Pat Kelsey were the other three candidates.

Yeah I secretly had been having conversations with the HPU athletic department. HMO got me in touch with JB who got me in touch with them and gave a glowing recommendation (after I got him a real nice salad)
