This word gets thrown out a ton this time of year. I think it's an absolutely ridiculous description but that's just me. Someone give me a good definition of what choking is?

Choking, I would define it, would be making fundamental mistakes or performing worse-than-expected when it's needed the most.

Example, so I can show the differences:

Greg Norman lost the lead in the Masters twice. The first time, he lost the tournament because some guy hit a ridiculous chip-in for the win. Such a thing happens, it sucks, Norman played his best, but lost. That's not choking.

Greg Norman in 1996, on the other hand... He had a six stroke lead heading into the final day. We could have reasonably expected him to win the tournament, had he played to his average level. As it turns out, he completely sucked that day, shooting a 78 -- and finished five strokes behind the leader.

He completely flubbed when it mattered the most. That's a choke.

True to form...he just bounced it OB with a one shot lead late in the round.

This defines the word choke, haha. Especially 2003, up 3-1 in the series against the marlins and the the Bill Bartman saga begins

There's a difference between overrated and choking.

I think choking means truly being in a position to win, and folding under the pressure/underperforming. See: Liberty football at Presby, Yankees in the ALCS against the Red Sox.

Overrated is when a team is "supposed" to win a game but doesn't. See: Ohio State football in the National Title games against UF and LSU
