Who is your choice as the most clutch player amongst active players in the nba today? Clutch in this case defined as "4th quarter or overtime, less than 5 minutes left, neither team ahead by more than 5 points."

I'm going LeBron James, his production per 48 minutes of clutch time is 55.4 points, 16.2 rebounds, 11.5 assists, and 3.1 assists. Only negative is the 7.7 TOs. stats courtesy of http://www.82games.com/0809/CSORT11.HTM

And he only hit his forst last second shot of the season last week...

Kobe is the man of last second shots, or maybe Mason in SA.

Robert Horry. He technically hasn't retired yet. Although he's still a free agent.

Can't forget the best shot in the league and his torching of the Lakers in the finals last year: Ray Allen.

not this season...but last season he was the man...

its probably kobe...lebron's jump shot isn't dependable enough to hit last second shots...and since most of the time last second shots are force to be jump shots lebron just doesn't have it...

He's hit more game-winning shots than Kobe has the past five years and his shooting percentage on game-winning shot attempts is better than Kobe's...

According to 82games.com, in "clutch" situations (five minutes left in the fourth or OT, with no team ahead by five), LeBron James averages the most points per 48 minutes (55.4); Kobe is third at 53.9.

In the last five years, LBJ has made the most "game winning" shots (24 seconds or less left in the game, team with the ball is either tied or down by 1 to 2 points) with 17. After that is Vince Carter, then Ray Allen, and fourth, Kobe Bryant (with 14).

Both LBJ and Kobe Bryant are 4-for-8 in playoff game winning shots.

The NBA average for FG percentage is 29.8%, a miserable number (although some are desperation, last-second heaves). LBJ shoots 34% in such situations. Kobe Bryant? 25%. In fact, he has the most missed game-winning shots over the last five years (42).

As for most clutch player? I'd say it's either LeBron James or... Carmelo Anthony. He's second in points per 48 minutes during clutch situations, less than a point behind LeBron with 54.7. He's also #5 over the last five years in most game winning shots made, with 13 (one behind Kobe)... and he shoots and INSANE 48% clip.

Chauncey Billups.

Game 7, NBA Finals. I'm giving the ball to Billups 9 times out of 10.

Also, Roland Beech recently found that Kobe Bryant makes a surprisingly low percentage of the shots he takes with the game on the line. Lewis uncovers some data from the Rockets that helps to explain that. Keep in mind the NBA 3-point line, at its furthest point, is an imposing 23 feet and nine inches from the hoop: "Since the 2002-3 season," writes Lewis, "Bryant had taken 51 3-pointers at the very end of close games from farther than 26.75 feet from the basket. He had missed 86.3 percent of them."

That means he is just 7 of 51 on those shots. Not very clutch in my opinion.

I'm bringing this thread back up for only one reason...

Remember when this was an actual discussion? After last night's buzzer-beating 3, I think LeBron clinched the title for 'most clutch player'.

I want to see him do it in the finals before I say with 100% certainty he is the most clutch, but you also don't have much of an argument from me about it.

Count me in among those who say that Kobe being the best in a game winning situation is almost totally an urban legand (AKA MYTH). He almost never even looks for his teammates (no matter how open they may be). Opponents know this, and the degree of difficulty of the shots he ends up taking is ridiculus. He makes one now and then, but his percentage is horrible.

Nah. Horry made some big shots, sure, but he never was a go-to guy. He is a player who started his career as a defender/rebounder, and then made himself into a good spot-up shooter who wasn't afraid to take that shot if he had it. He had zero ability to create it for himself. In a game-ending situation, he was a 6'9" version of Steve Kerr or John Paxson. I give him credit for making that shot against Sacramento, but the fact that the ball came to him at the buzzer was luck and nothing more.

Horry was clutch - I think he is pretty much retired, he didnt play in a single game this year

Fisher doesnt shoot enough in clutch situations to be clutch, this isnt the early 2000s or 1990s anymore...

If I was a coach, I would take Billups or Gilbert Arenas to take the last shot in a big game, if I got to choose anyone that's still around/recent.
