While its doubtful that it'll happen, the fact that they're talking about cutting athletics completely at Chattanooga and UT-Martin is a little disturbing:

I hate to see any colleges lose their programs especially football. I still have not gotten over UT dropping football over 30 yrs ago. University of Tampa that is.
But lets say UTC drops football would that open the door for us to get in the SC?

I guess I read it differently...cutting sports is different than doing away with athletics.

-- Cutting athletics at UT-Martin and UT-Chattanooga, which are subsidized by tax dollars. The state provides about $3.9 million per year for athletics at Martin and about $4.3 million at Chattanooga, officials said. At UT-Knoxville, all athletic programs are covered by the revenue-producing football and basketball programs.
Yeah, it looks like they're talking about the whole athletics program based on the article. Chances of it happening are slim, but its still being mentioned as an option.

Matter of perception. I did not read it as cutting=eliminating
