With all due respect to the cocktail party, the Texas-OU game is the greatest annual spectacle in sports and it takes centerstage today in the Cotton Bowl. I realize to most of you that nothing west of the Appalachians (much less the Mississippi) has any importance. But count me among those who will be glued to his television this afternoon.

Hopefully the Land Thieves will be crying their way back across the Red River by the opening kickoff for the Flames.

They head to the break at the Cotton Bowl with the Dirt Burglars sporting a 1-point lead.

The Horns get the ball to start the second half.

Sly is floating on air with the Horns up by ten with 4 minutes to go on the soon-to-be former #1 team in the nation!

Congrats on winning the Red River RIVALRY! Get the name straight.

If you're going to insist on calling it FBS and FCS (instead of I-A and I-AA)...I am going to call YOUR game by it's PROPER name...

I think the last time I heard someone refer to something as the greatest spectacle in sports was when the american beat the japanese guy in the hot dog eating contest, so I dont know how valid that statement is anymore.

My intention was in referencing it as the greatest reference in college sports. And I don't have a complex as I firmly believe the Big XII is the best conference in the nation right now (sorry, SEC fans). But it seems there are only about 3-4 posters on here who seem to care about any college sports beyond Virginia & the Carolinas. There is a reason Mack Brown bolted Chapel Hill ...

And fumbles, I'm not one of the FCS nazis on here. I freely refer to it as both I-AA and FCS (often using both). And as a proud LU alum I am not easily manipulated by the political correctness the resulted in the name change from shootout to rivalry a couple of years ago (case in point my mention of the cocktail party). Folks down here in Texas still refer to it as the shootout. Using rivalry only cheapens the intensity of the duel.

And I'm not fat, the sky isn't blue, the grass isn't green, and Liberty didn't win today.

with all due respect sly, you have consatantly whined how no one on the board cares about the big 12, well we all pay attention, we just do not talk about it, because most on the board like the SEC/ACC better, and plus it's on tv here. no doubt the big 12 is the best this year, but your complex is there my friend.....and the best spectacle comment is still simply hilarious!!!!!

Frustrated by lack of understanding by this board of any sports beyond Mid-Atlantic region? Yes.

Possessing a Napoleonic Complex? No.

As for the board having no clue about the sheer incredible nature of the Texas-OU experience, I consider it a personal crusade to enlighten the dim ACC-dominated minds when it comes to football.

Personally I like teh SEC but my favorite college team (beyond LU of course) and my national championship pick both had a Big 12 flavor.

My favorite college team is Texas Tech. I started following then a couple years ago after I saw they put up pretty eye-popping numbers. Then as I started getting into football and even as I am in coaching football class (and Sch14 can attest), it became clear that I love to pass the football...a lot...so I booked my ticket on the Red Raider band wagon. As for NC (and yes I saw the result of the game yesterday) I actually had Oklahoma as my champion. Now Texas definitely made soem noise but I had Oklahoma playing Alabama with Oklahoma winning (Im sorry Sly). Now I really think that the Big 12 and SEC are right there at 1 and 2, with a very slight edge going to the SEC as they have had the last two national champions (with the Longhorns taking it the year before Urban Meyer adn his boys got it done).

Longhorns make historic leap to peak of AP's Top 25

Associated Press
Updated: October 12, 2008, 9:51 PM ET

NEW YORK -- Texas rode its resounding Red River Rivalry upset right to No. 1.

The Longhorns leapfrogged No. 2 Alabama on Sunday and sit atop The Associated Press Top 25 in the regular season for the first time in 24 years after beating Oklahoma 45-35.

Texas' jump to No. 1 is the largest since Miami went from No. 6 to No. 1 on Aug. 29, 1988, after beating preseason top-ranked Florida State 31-0 to start the season.

Texas received 39 first-place votes and 1,599 points from the media panel. Alabama received the other 36 first-place votes and 1,582 points.

I can assure you that I am well versed in the activities in Jax ... but what goes on in Dallas takes things to a completely different level. But then again, its not the ACC so it really doesn't matter now, does it?

sorry sly, but you are in the minority on this one and im sure if you took a poll nationwide, the florida/georgia game is more popular that OU/Texas.

Sly, I am with you! (and I am native Virginian...but have a Texan for a father!)
What a game!! I was really glad for Colt McCoy, who I happen to ADORE, and was pleased with his post-game interview. He is a class act (did you hear the interview I think two seasons ago when he and his dad swam across a lake to rescue a man?)
And, I am glad that they got it right and put TX in the number 1 slot....they have quite a schedule remaining. I hope that they win out, because if they don't Penn State will probably jump them and the rest of Penn State's schedule (besides perhaps Ohio State) is a cake walk compared to UT. The last thing I would want to see is Penn State playing for the national title.
Anyway, Hook 'em Horns :D
