NFL players union chief Upshaw dies at 63

NEW YORK - Gene Upshaw, the Hall of Fame guard who as union head helped get NFL players free agency and the riches that came with it, has died. He was 63.

Upshaw’s death was announced by the NFL Players Association, which he headed for a quarter century.

Didn't see that one coming.

Yeah that sucks. But I was getting tired of him. Too bad.

I didn't really want to be callous just yet since somebody just died, but since that line was already crossed, this will make the upcoming uncapped year and salary negotiations very interesting with an unknown element coming in to head the NFLPA. I believe Gene was responsible for giving in to the salary cap but he was also pretty set on striking in 2010 or 11. Whenever that was.

Ha. In the article I read on Espn they added at the end that Stover wanted Upshaw out as Executive Director, like he had something to do with his death.

I'm dying to know why you have this grudge against Upshaw. Did he pee on your dog or something?

This could very easily turn into a litany of additions to the Encounter thread so I will pass on my observations.

But I would prefer that we keep a thread about someone's passing related to the topic at hand.
