I agreebthatnthey are nowhere near ready. But it just shows the warped mentality of the decision makers in the Conference so many wanted to move heaven and earth to join. Obviously the are not the best conference for us to join

I'll be the first to say that if Coastal is what the SB considers #FBSReady then we dodged a bullet.

This is basically like that time you asked a girl to prom and she turned you down. For a few days you felt sad but then you walked up behind her and saw her eating her own boogers when nobody was looking.

At that point you realize, "I'm glad that didn't work out."

Our time will come. We still have momentum after a historic year.

I would eat her boogers for her all day since she's our way to the cool kid table.

Coastal Carolina will become the 12th member of the Sun Belt Conference, according to a person with knowledge of the process. The person spoke to USA TODAY Sports on the condition of anonymity because the conference had not yet made the news public.

Coastal Carolina will join Sun Belt in football in 2017-18, all other sports in 2016-17 sources told @ESPN

Coastal Carolina will join the Sun Belt for the 2016-2017 seasons, SB Nation's Steven Godfrey reported.

If they don't start football play until 2017, are they still in the Big South next year, or is this a transition year?

Never mind - the article answered my question:
Coastal Carolina will join the league in 2016 in all sports but football, which is expected to have an FBS transitional year and be a full member in 2017.
This is an interesting takeaway:
Coastal Carolina already has strong men's basketball and baseball programs, which contributed to the Chanticleers being selected over Eastern Kentucky for the invitation. Liberty had also been angling for admission to the league in recent years.
I don't think basketball brought us down, but our poor performance there certainly didn't help.

This is the reality. It didn't matter that it's a crappy conference. It's the only way in.

Time to start crafting our legal strategy.
So we wouldbrather go to the Prom with a booger eater and will do whatever it takes to go with them.
Lots of other girls (or guys) to take to the Prom. Maybe not this year but still better than the syphilitic booger eater

Maybe those guys in the FBS independent thread have the right idea... :P

Lol you guys are funny. A few months ago every one of you would have loved to be in Coastals position. You guys were all about the sun belt and now because our rival got in before us it's all of a sudden dodging a bullet? (Or dodging taking a booger eater to prom?) riiiiiight. Maybe it's complete dark side in me but I think we missed the boat. Sorry to rain on y'all's parade but this time, we didn't #BeatCoastal...

You make a good point. I just don't see the "Big 12 that's really 10" expanding, even though they're the only conference without a title game. They're holding out for the rules to change so they don't have to relax their grip on the TV money allocated to each of the schools. I think something has to happen with them for the dominoes to fall in the near future.

In the meantime, I have to pause and ask this question, because it's been on my mind ever since Coastal Carolina became an option for the Sun Belt. Did anyone, in a million years, ever expect our biggest rival to get this invite? They weren't even looking to move up, and they did it without a Carr Report ore any national press talking up how ready they were for the move. It's so surreal, it's actually funny - maybe a little. :banghead

To be fair, some folks were saying all along that the Sun Belt was a poor man's FBS option and that we could do better. I was hoping for any invite, Sun Belt or otherwise, and while I'm disappointed, I'm not going to throw shade at them except to say it's obvious that they did everything they could not to pick us, and I don't have to think well of them for that.

They turned us down and the $10 mil we were offering them. If it's not clear to anyone on this board that we won't be receiving an FBS invite for one and only one reason and that is our mission. Then I can't help you.

Had we been to the playoffs four times, gotten to the quarterfinals twice, been to the NCAA tourney in basketball 2-3 times, and made the super regionals a couple times in baseball, the Sun Belt wouldn't have cared if we were a school of radical Muslims. They would've seen a winner who could help them.

IMHO, this is a very bad move for CCU. It is going to take a few years for them to be competitive in football. As it is, they have poor support for their team. A few years of not being eligible for post-season play while they are in transition and then a few more years for them to make their mark (if they ever do) in the SBC, is going to be difficult for them to keep their current level of attendance. They will not be competitive in basketball either. The years of losing in those sports could impact their baseball team as well, not as likely of course. As far as Olympic sports, don't see them as better than average/middle of conference performers.
Most of the people who live in the MB area, have no allegiance to the school, and they have a large retirement contingent that have little to no interest in CCU.
I wish we would have received the invite, but we didn't. I am not resentful of CCU in any way. I think they are going to get what they bargained for and would not be shocked to see them back in FCS some day ie. SoCon, CAA.

I sincerely doubt it, SJ. Nothing in the process indicates that would have swayed the presidents. But alas, it doesn't matter at this point. It is time to recalibrate and explore our options.

SuperJon wrote:They focused on winning.

We focused on telling people we were great.

At the end of the day, winning matters.
Georgia State was 6-5, 3-8 and 1-10 before they were accepted into the Sun Belt.

Texas State was 4-7, 6-6, and 4-8 before they were accepted into the Sun Belt.

New Mexico State was 10-40 from 2009 to 2012, and in their last season before being admitted to the Sun Belt as a football-only member, they were 2-10.

Liberty hasn't had a losing season since Danny Rocco took over as head coach.

Winning doesn't matter to them.
