Notice I said miscalculation and not mistake. It was not a mistake to make intentions known. The miscalculation was in just how ready an FBS conference was to receive LU, and it's clear that the Sun Belt (preferred landing spot of the admin, it seems) was never going to embrace a private school with unlimited resources among its group of public schools with limited resources. The same issue exists with the MAC. The admin has done everything it can to try to convince Sun Belt presidents to look at Liberty with more of an objective eye, but only a precious few have flipped their positions. Liberty was ready for FBS. Clearly FBS was not ready for Liberty. That's my point.
I know a lot of people talk about our mission as being the main reason we are being kept out. But I don't think you can underscore just how important this point is. We're blinded by our own financial success and don't really understand what life is truly like at a mid-tier public institution. They don't have the resources we do, and they know if we come, we will set the tone in terms of facilities and athletic support that they will not be able to match. It's just that simple.

Now, in terms of the preferred landing spot of LU Athletics... I don't believe the Sunbelt is the first choice of LU's administration. It's just been presented to them that the SBC was really our only option and since we only wanted a move to the FBS, the SBC was the target. Truth be told, the CUSA would be a better fit for LU and I think most of the adminstration would choose that conference over the SBC if they had the option.

Exactly. I would go a little further along and say this goes along with them not being ready to accept a school with our type of mission either. Mission + Money= Fear and no FBS invite.

Ha. Go get Em tiger! They are there but I'm not the one making accusations. SJ posted a good one and regardless of the timing, the point was and is still valid

Intentions? I think Doc let that one slip in the mid 70's. :)

Our intentions have been well known since Carter was in the WH. The difference was how we have approached it the last few years.

Agree 100%. I don't believe the mission is near as big a problem as the money. As far as announcing our intentions, when we did it, how we did it, etc ..................... bull......................logna.

What's wrong with Bologna? I prefer a good couple of slices in of German Bologna from the deli. Much better than Oscar Meyer from a package!

As to your point How about this. 'We are extremely excited and encouraged about the findings in the Carr Report. Dr Falwell's vision was for Liberty Athletics to compete at the highest level and this report shows that we have been doing the right things to head in that direction. We have stated for years that we would, like many other Universities, play at the FBS level we are not there nor have any pending offers. Our focus is to be the best at what we do where we are, regardless in what division or conference we compete. The BSC has been a tremendous partner over the years and had faith in us when others did not. We will always be grateful and appreciative of their efforts in helping Liberty Athletics compete at a high level.
We would like to thank the people at Carr Sports for all they have done and showed us during this process. With these results we look forward to an exciting future for Liberty Athletics. And you should too! Remeber it's never the wrong time to join the Flames Club!'

The problem with those statements is that even if we got invited by the Sun-Belt or the MAC, they know we would also jump at the bit if the AAC or C-USA invited us. Because of our aspirations, there is a chance that we would join the Sun-Belt and never play a game if we received a better offer.

Those statements put us in a make or break situation. We haven't received an invite and if Coastal left tomorrow, we would still be stuck in this pathetic joke of a conference. We have no chances at joining the CAA or SoCon. Even if our chances were slim at joining another FCS conference before these statements were made, we essentially slammed every potential door by making our aspirations known.

Nobody is going to hold us to 30 year old statements made by our late chancellor. But they'll hold us to statements made just a few years ago on a study that showcased our assets.

Meanwhile, Coastal has been quiet and emerged as the smartest kid in the class; and we've just simply been the loudest. Maybe they aren't ready for a jump yet, but at least they're wanted.

As I have said before, it is critical that we do our part to build and stabilize the Big South by actively seeking new members for conference, regardless of what happens with our FBS ambitions.

Prospective conferences and their members institutions will hold us accountable for what Jerry Falwell said and for what the administration has said during the past few years.

... and to a certain degree so is Texas. But the level of interest is relatively small at this point. UT & OU have much more in common institutionally with B1G (and Pac-12) schools than they do their Bubba brethren to the east.

KU should have gone into the B1G in the last round of realignment. Still can't believe Delaney botched snaring both the Jayhawks & Mizzou when he could have done so.

Ha. Nope. Just trying to simmer Kiwon down. This would have been a much better statement and approach than the one we took. I believe I and other :flamingdevil members said as much

Big 12 adding affiliate members for wrestling and gymnasitcs:

http://collegesportsblog.dallasnews.com ... tics.html/

Of the new wrestling affiliates, Air Force would likely be the only candidate that anyone would have any remote interest in adding as a full member.

In other news, it appears our field hockey team no longer has a conference to call home. It seems the NorPac has folded. App State is now in the SunBelt, Radford no longer has a team, Davidson joined the A-10, Longwood relocated its Field Hockey program to the MAC and Stanford and Cal are now playing in America East.

That's an interesting development, FH isn't a major sport but it's a continually growing program on the mountain. Something needs to be done about that.

Trust me... it wasn't. The secondary report that came out was not grounded in reality.

For the record, I didn´t say the Carr report was wrong, only that it seemed to suspiciously match the wishes of the administration, as did ours.. I think what happened at UAB is a bunch of alumni and local people/businesses got in an uproar when they shut down the program and made pledges of increased support. I take it collection on those pledges has been slow. It´s easy to make a promise in the heat of the moment. Actually forking over the money is another matter.
