If you want to talk ASUN smack or ramble ad nauseum about your favorite pro or major college teams, this is the place to let it rip.

But that is just a hypothesis. The combination of the two factors makes it impossible to prove. Grand Canyon only has moved up out of the WAC's desperation. But they are in the same boat for the most part moving forward.
For sure our mission has an impact, particularly as it relates to the SBC, since they've had one private institution in their history of being a league that was barely "religious" in nature. With respect to GCU, the stigma surrounding them is different than the one LU faces. Sure, GCU is 'Christian', but they go about it differently than we do. The number one stigma they face is that they are a for-profit, publicly traded company.

Yep. Boy I know a few people who that would really rub the wrong way in LU's leadership.

CCU had an average attendance of 8,749 per game in 2014, or 92% of their total possible seats. The % is not too shabby, but their stadium isn't really close to the size it needs to be. The average per game is really pretty middle of the road amongst all of the FCS and far from the required 15,000, 2 yr rolling average that must be obtained for a move to FBS without the risk of probation.

Also, I found this little tidbit on Akron... seems that there is trouble brewing in the MAC and Akron could eventually find themselves out of the FBS.

Yep the article I found states that and mentions that there have already been discussions to take the athletics program to FCS, or even DII status. Evidently, they built a $62,000,000 stadium on campus that seats 30,000, but have only averaged around 9,500/yr the past several years. I'm betting that JMU may have had some advanced knowledge about this situation and knew it might only be a matter of time before a spot would open in the FBS conference they preferred to join.

I genuinely hope you guys get in, but it won't end good for either party. The big downside for us would be that LU wouldn't have much competition in many sports, without the MB crew in the conference. Good luck.

Truth be told, CCU is a logical choice for the Sun Belt. It's a public school with a Top 10 FCS program in football and a winning basketball program, and it's more profitable than five of the existing Sun Belt schools. It's also in the east, which is where they were hoping to add a 12th member.

If Akron folds, then JMU moves into the MAC, and I think that'll be it.

It sounds like if Mr. Wall Street wants to be an FBS coach, he can now buy his way into the position. I don't see the CCU alumni or the State of SC ponying up to making it happen.

Perhaps. But I am being pragmatic as well. Here is his opportunity to leverage his wealth and the Chants get to go along for the ride. It would have been tough for him to envision such a possibility just a couple of years ago.

Just curious....does anyone know if Joe Moglia has turned down some FBS coaching positions?

Realistically, the guy's 32-10 with playoff wins in three seasons. If they have success again, how much longer will he be at CCU? I would imagine that he'd take a solid FBS job rather than take years shepherding CCU through a transition to FBS.

Clearly the private school thing scares the hell out of the sun belt conference. I never thought I'd say it but at this point the only way we move up is to be granted independent status. I know the rules on that so the possibility of that happening are slim to none but they are still better chances than getting a fbs conference invite at this point.

How can 'none' be better odds? Man I'm glad you don't gamble :D
Suing and/or going Independent would be the beginning of the end for our FB aspirations.

My 2 cents...

Right now we are starting to make a name for ourselves in FCS. Could we say that a few years ago?? Continued seasons of on-field success along with quality wins at out of conference games and Liberty will be a standard household name among the elite FCS programs such as NDS, Mont, JMU, EWS and the likes.

Seeing the current field of FBS, it seems any move up and we may be at the bottom level with a much more difficult venture to become elite, as being part of anything with P5 is extremely unlikely.

I'm beginning to lean towards more years of exciting playoff appearances, constantly contending for a national championship, than being part of a low level FBS conference where even a championship does not automatically signal participation in post-seasons opportunities.

I am currently enjoying the ride of success that seems to be growing with each and every year in multiple sports. Our campus is in the process of transforming physically and academically to compete in both the top level of FCS schools and FBS.

It think it's safe to say that staying in FCS for the foreseeable future is not a completely horrible alternative. Besides Football, we already have opportunities to play and possibly compete with the big players in most sports.

The only problem with this logic is that we've locked ourselves into the Big South. While the Big South has gained in recent years in terms of athletic prowess... its really only because of LU and CCU's recent successes (CCU moreso). If they leave now, then we are relegated to lower league FCS status once again with no chance of switching to another FCS conference, because of our FBS or bust mentality.
