Not gonna lie. This hurts. But UAB suddenly disbanding was out of nowhere in the first place. So I guess we're back where we started.

I am glad for UAB. My buddy Rep Jack Williams was not going to stop until they got it back. He told me without a doubt months ago. It was the right thing for the University and the athletic dept there. As for Liberty, if the Big South is in the near and distant future I hope a string of championships in the 3 big sports is in the works, the goal, the plan and the mentality. Liberty has long outgrown the Big South in terms of resources and facilities. Probably the only way to move up at this point is to be so dominant in those sports that the whole country starts to wonder who Liberty is it becomes part of the national conversation. Playing and winning on a national scale will do that. NOT EASY at all but I think that may have to be the conduit at this point.

Out of basketball, football and baseball, men's basketball has the capability to get Liberty on a national scale sooner.

Schools like Gonzaga, Davidson (when they had Curry), and FGCU got noticed because of men's basketball. I'm hopeful that McKay can bring our program some much needed recognition come tourney time.

I am not necessarily moving over to the Dark Side but looking at the landscape and actually talking to AD's, SID's and coaches in the leagues that Liberty is looking at for membership, it appears that my approach above may be the only viable option. Liberty is just not perceived as being a legitimate player in the college athletics landscape. The good news is that Liberty can control the perception of the program by continuing to position itself as an option. The biggest component in that equation is on-field/court success over a sustained period of time.

As an outsider, I have a suggestion for Liberty.

You've got to do something about that men's basketball team. Hovering about 300 RPI isn't going to get you an invitation to CUSA regardless of resources or who leaves. We already have the two Florida schools dragging us down.

Football has possibilities. Make the NIT in basketball and we'll talk.

Yes I agree that it has been a founding tenant but was presented as the ONLY way. Now it appears that it may actually BE the only viable option.

I believe the founding tenet was that we shouldn't move up until we won big at FCS level. It seems to evolve over the years to suit some posters.

We evolve based upon the landscape, but winning big and consistently at our current level was always a cornerstone.
A couple of things have changed. We have proven to be willing to pour close to unlimited funds into FB, so we obviously don't care about making money or breaking even. Our attendance has improved as the team has improved
What hasn't changed is that, given a choice, the average Lynchburger would rather go to see UVA or VT. But that goes back to the previous paragraph

I'm in this boat as well. I'm still not sure it's a good option, but it's pretty obvious it's our only option.

UAB finds a way to keep football and this entire board freaks out as if we had a right to their open spot. This is why there are close to 200 pages of complete nonsense.

THIS. And I was completely against getting in that way. but its not looking good.

call me a cynic.

all the leagues out there will continue to present a moving target as to what LU needs to do to fit in.

we don't fit in.

But it makes it a lot easier to overlook where we DONT fit in if we have success on the fields of competition. A perennial FCS FB run in the play offs and some nice showings in the MBB Tourney we can look better. Having success where we are at will cover up a lot of woes. Is it the only factor? Nope. But we can make ourselves attractive by being successful

Forget nice showings in the MBB tourney, maybe just getting 20-wins a year in MBB regular season would be good. What would you rather have? A 20-loss regular season where we consistently get hot and then win the Big South tourney and MAYBE a play-in game every year, or a 20-win season/regular season championship with a bid to at least the NIT?

Also, women's bball needs to make another run in the dance.

My post was meant for the "we'll never get invited" remarks or the ones supporting a lawsuit for independence. Few felt this way until UAB re-instated football and now people are becoming irrational. Suing to become an independent is still the dumbest option. We are basically in the exact spot we were in before UAB, the only difference is that our chances at C-USA MAY have been pushed back.

I believe its the same people calling for us to sue our way into FBS before UAB dropped football. Those calls will be repeated everytime when even the remotest possibility fades back into darkness.

Also, this thread was initially started more to discuss all the realignment happening at the FBS level than about the possibility of us moving up. Those discussions only really began infecting this thread the last 75 pages or so.
