Reminds me of a classic Archie Bunker-George Jefferson conversation that was hilarious:

Jefferson: That's what's wrong with you people!

Bunker: Who are you calling "you people"?! YOU PEOPLE are "you people".

My point is...the so-called "anti-Liberty" coalition in the Sun Belt will go to pretty extreme lengths to avoid extending an invite.

Just playing devil's advocate here but why raise the entrance fee to $2 million?

Liberty may be the only school that can afford that. Could it be that they know LU could be the only viable option by doing it thereby appeasing some folks who may be against an LU invite.

"We gauged the interest of EKU, CU, MOST, etc. but they can't afford the upgrades and invite, etc" or "LU is the only option so let's get more money out of them by raising the entrance fee"

There actually could be something there Liberty22. If Liberty is willing to pay a ton more than most were to "buy their way in" then it would appear to others that perhaps the Sunbelt was discriminating against "Christians" by charging more than they would some other entity. So if you raise the price of admission for all but you know only 1 can afford it, you stay away from potential negative legal impacts down the road. I'm not saying that is the case but it does seem probable.

I'm not sure that's not the thought process. This way they can be bought without looking like they were bought

That wouldn't make it too obvious...
that and half their members want out eventually too

raising the exit fee results in them effectively boning themselves

First off, that fee is not insurmountable for most of the candidates considering the CFP payouts that new member will be eligible to receive. The Sun Belt believes they hold the golden ticket and should price it accordingly. However the exit fees seem to be a more concerted effort to hold onto their existing members who might be on the fence about a CUSA invitation should one open up thanks to UAB. But I don't see the exit fees keeping ULaLa or USA from bolting. It just adds a little sting to the decision.

Some of the folks on the Belt board seem to believe that these moves mean that some back-channel maneuvering has been underway and they could announce a decision by June 1st. They seem to think Missouri State & EKU are the two league targets. I personally think these moves make it less likely that NMSU would accept a full invitation from the Belt. Such a move would certainly price them out of another jump to CUSA or MWC down the line should something materialize. They can simply camp out in the WAC and even still be eligible for any type of WAC football resuscitation. Why pay entry fee to the Belt and then an additonal exit & entry fee for move to league they really want should one open up in next year or so.

WSFA wrote:Rep Jack Williams: Sources say UAB football not returning

BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) - Alabama Representative Jack Williams says three sources have told him UAB president Dr. Ray Watts will be issuing an e-mail at 7 p.m. Friday stating that football will not be returning.

Watts announced the University would be ending the programs in December 2014. That announcement was followed by months of protests, public outrage and national media coverage.

Williams says his sources believe Watts never intended to restore the program.

“If the reports are true, to make the announcement on social media at 7 p.m. on Friday night at the beginning of a holiday weekend is cowardice at its best,” Williams said in a phone interview on Good Day Alabama.

The Sun Belt posters think a lot of things.

Right now, it seems that two things are working in our favor. Conference championship game deregulation is in gridlock. Unless something dramatically changes, the 12 team requirement is not going to be eliminated. Second, UAB will be dropping football for good barring a miracle.

Now that we are making inroads in the playoffs, contending for an actual national championship while bidding time for the right situation is quite appealing to me.
