According to their Carr report, UAB plans to add men's cross country, men's outdoor track, and men's outdoor track and drop football. On the women's side, they will eliminate rifle and bowling in order to maintain Title IX compliance. Getting back to 6 (or more) men's sports and getting in step with Title IX are what they will have to do in order to remain in D-I.

That's the point I was going to make. The moves they are taking are practically spelled out for them in their Carr study.

"The FBS Pro Forma, benchmarked at a competitive level in CUSA, forecasts expenses increasing from $30.2 million in FY15 to $38.5 million in FY19. Additional investments in each sport would be required to reach a nationally competitive level, particularly in Football. During the same period, UAB Athletics generated revenues are expected to grow by less than $1 million. Concurrently, the University is committed to maintaining institutional support of approximately $14.5 million annually, along with modest Student Fee increases of 3% per year.

Thus, the FBS Pro Forma shows expenses significantly surpassing revenues, with the cumulative net expense deficit over the five-year life of this Pro Forma calculated at $25.3 million. Conversely, assuming the current level of institutional investment, the Division I Without Football Pro Forma predicts a total five-year net revenue of approximately $2.0 million. Therefore, the difference in operating financials is estimated to be $27.3 million over five years with Football."

It's hard not to consider the current AL BOT system basically rigged against the smaller schools and nothing would change without a lengthy lawsuit. I would have to give President Watts the benefit of the doubt and believe that he made his decision based on the financial realities of the situation.

Of course, there are critics that take aim at the report itself - http://www.al.com/opinion/index.ssf/201 ... ry_package

Yeah, many states have similar systems but the issue is what degree of autonomy does the other campus have? In addition, if both schools are competing with one another at the same level then there is a conflict.

That conflict may not come down to who wins on the field but at the very least it's a conflict of who gets resources to run their programs either educational or athletic.

BuryYourDuke wrote:Depends on how you look at it. I can see the logic that one school shouldn't be governed by another. However, some states have university systems that are set up as main hubs with branch campuses. UAB was definitely originally intended to be a branch of UA. It has obviously developed into it's own. I definitely would support separating them though.
They aren't going to separate. If they attempted to do that, UAB would be gutted and could not survive in its present form.

Sounds like more of a systemic issue for UAB sports, starting with the president. From what some are saying they want it to be more of a research school and focused more on Grad and post grad etc.

Not getting into the SunBelt Last year was a major benefit in disguise. If we would have come to an agreement last summer, would we have been eligible to make the playoffs ? It was my understanding that we would have played a Big South Schedule but not been eligible for the post season.

I can imagine how the outside public, (and some insiders) would have reacted if LU went FBS with decades of FCS and not making the playoffs. It was nice to be able to accomplish something at this level before moving to the next level.

We already have the stigma of Daddy's Rich little snobs, It would only have been worse if we bought our way into the FBS without any real substance at the FCS level. I still believe we will have to buy our way in, but at least now we have this sweet 16 to fall back on.

IF we get into CUSA, ODU will be the norm on our schedule.

I exchanged several tweets with the writer of that article, Adam Rosenfield, yesterday. We've also exchanged a few e-mails today. He's working on a piece for the offseason on Liberty. He's a nice guy, try to take it easy on him!

A more accurate description would be 'Liberty has strongly considered a move to ANY FBS Conference that will take them. No FBS conference has returned that interest

Another article today on CUSA potential replacements
The university, which was founded in 1971, has quickly risen to the top of the FCS level. Liberty has the financial backing to support a major college athletic department. The Flames over the past decade have upgraded every athletic venue including the football stadium, which saw a 55,000 square foot facility added. The facility houses athletic offices along with club and suite levels, giving Liberty the ability to host functions inside its football facility. Liberty was rated as the 80th best university in the South region by US News and World Report. The Flames also have the ability to reach nearly half a million homes thanks to expansive Roanoke-Lynchburg, Virginia market.

Agreed, mostly to be FBS and in a perceived higher conference than SBC, if only to stick it to those so vocally opposed to us over there, in the most gracious way possible that is.
