One of my good friends and former coworker is over there now and he's been sending me updates. Its really sad. I try and put myself in his shoes when i talk about the situation over at UAB. I know we are all gung ho about going FBS but what is taking place right now is truly sad. a university is losing their football program. and quite possibly other sports programs as well. I hate it for the students, players, Support staff and coaching staff. I've met Bill Clark. Really classy coach. I hate it for all of them.

So if UAB athletics continues to be a Division I program, where do they go and who replaces them? Will the A-10 or Big East take them, or will they be forced to go all the way down to the A-Sun? Also, UAB only offers SIX men's sports (Football, Basketball, Baseball, Golf, Soccer and Tennis). Will they need to add another men's program? What women's programs will they drop (my guesses are Sand Volleyball, Bowling and Rifle)?

They could add T&F and/or CC and keep most of their women's programs operating if the bullies decide to throw the folks in Birmingham a bone. But I suspect we could be seeing the end of UAB athletics altogether.

UAB fans should be kicking themselves and not automatically blaming the UAT, even though they have some legitimate grievances; they knew that this was a strong possibility years ago and still never got behind the program.

And it sounds like a significant number of the student protestors were members of the marching band, which will go away when football does. That's pitiful when you think about it. How many do you think would show up to protest if LU were threatening to end football?

Wow. If the organizers had a clue that was all they were going to have, they should have cancelled the whole thing. Better do nothing than prove how little support you have with such a pitiful turnout.

I'd show up if LU were threatening to end football.

Or do they pull a Birmingham Southern?

I was wondering about that SJ...although Birmingham-Southern is private, so they have more leeway to do what they want than UAB.

It's official, UAB drops football, Bowling and Rifle Team according to my sources. But UAB wants to remain in the conference. But there's a chance that they may be thrown out of conference. It is not good for any conference when you have non football playing schools. See BSC: Radford, Longwood, High Point.

Wasn't really a response. More of a clarification. You've been anti-UAB football from the very beginning, and with quite a bit of hostility. Any time someone mentions the CBS article about Bryant Jr and the Bama BOT, you jump on it and say it's only one side of the story.

Regardless of fandom, any time a university loses an athletics program is a sad day. It was sad when we lost wrestling. It was sad when JMU cut many of their programs a few years back. This impacts the lives of many college kids much more than on the field.

this isn't a support issue. This is a ABOT issue. Look back when UAB tried to hire Jimbo fisher. Little bear blocked it Twice. even when the school presented financial evidence that they could afford to hire him. They tried to build an on campus stadium again with the financial backing of donors. Little bear and the ABOT blocked it. Everywhere the school turned there was a battle just to survive. The school handled this VERY poorly IMO. Watts bowed down before the Board and lacked significant backbone to stand up and fight the ABOT. From what I have been told UAB brings in HUGE amounts of money via their medical and law programs. that money goes into the alabama university system and is dispersed. (to places like UA) i've been reading articles about this all day. from all that i've read this stinks to high heaven.

What is sad about this whole thing is that eventually it is going to kill the athletics department at UAB all together. and Duke- coaches might be bought out and paid but what about all the support staff? the managers, trainers, SID's, Ops. Etc. Those guys are without a job today. I know some of them personally. It sucks. Its not a corporation, its a team. You'd feel differently if it were happening to your alma mater.

Has anybody really compared this to any real world tragedy? I get where you're coming from but I don't get why you keep saying that.

Eventually? You have to have 6 men's sports to be at D-I. Without football, they are down to 5.
