A young man named Dr. Wood Selig introduced himself to me at ODU last night after my game on American Sports Network between Richmond and Old Dominion. You guys may know him as the Athletic Director of the Monarchs. He wanted to thank us for covering the game and I told him I was a Liberty grad. He said "I LOVE LIBERTY" and lit up at the mere mention of our name. I asked him to be sure to consider Liberty when they start shopping again. He said he loves what they are doing over there and they would be a great fit for the conference. Then we started talking football and the conversation got sad for me because of the near miss down there at ODU a year ago when Liberty blew a late lead.

Mad name-dropping skills, bro! You have learned well.

Seriously, it is great to hear that the Selig appreciation for what we are doing is legitimate.

I didn't even mention my interview with Nancy Lieberman or my long talks with Chris Mooney and Jeff Jones. Or going out with Tommy Amaker tonight in Boston 8)

I interviewed Nancy Lieberman when she played for the Phoenix Mercury back in the mid-90s. Also, I'm old. Also, I just admitted to covering a WNBA game.

I have heard some buzz from a couple of folks in Sun Belt circles that South Alabama is strong on the C-USA radar should UAB go away as expected. These same folks were almost embarassed to mention that our name is coming back up as a possible replacement. Apparently Staver's departure was a bigger deal to some of our detractors than most of us would expect. That combined with our App State victory and first trip to the playoffs has us looking much more attractive to them. And it would be Missouri State that would be on speed dial for Benson and not JMU. The folks in Harrisonburg have made it clear they have no interest at this point. Of course, that could change down the road.

My only source in H'burg has said JMU looks down on the SBC and would consider it a lateral or backwards move. They are waiting for the best fit, not first option.

JMU is never going to the Sun Belt. The only people affiliated with the school who would remotely support such a move, are a handful of fans.

I know we can't be choosers here but I'd pass on the Sun Belt. I'd wait for something more attractive came along and I'd continue to raise our FCS profile. That's blasphemy around here but the SBC seems to be a ticking time bomb.

I agree. It's not like Liberty isn't playing at all. They are competing at Division 1 level and fielding a good football team. Sunbelt is the Big South of FBS IMO. CUSA would be a great fit and certainly an upgrade in all sports. I believe it is possible too.

I understand that viewpoint. It's easier to move anywhere once you are in the party. I'm just saying that to ME it is better to stay where you are and dominate the Big South than to move to a sub par FBS conference.

The problem is Liberty hasn't been able to dominate the Big South. We would all be happy if hoops just DOESNT LOSE 20 games. Wow the standard has been lowered for hoops. I was on a staff that won 23 games and lost in the conference finals in a MAJOR upset and the coach wasn't here the next season.

I might add we lost in the finals with our all conference PG on the bench with a bad hammie. You could argue expectations for MBB were actually unrealistically HIGH back then. Things really have changed.

:exactly :exactly
I'd like nothing more than for the Sun Belt to come to us asking us to join and have our folks be able to turn them down this time. They acted like it was an insult that we'd want to be a part of the conference, they'd rather not even have a championship game if they had to invite us - now they'd need us and we tell them to take a hike.

It won't happen, though, because we're desperate and will take any offer no matter what. I'd still love for it to happen, though.

USA Today wrote:UAB prepared to shut down football program
Dan Wolken, USA TODAY Sports 3:17 p.m. EST November 30, 2014

With UAB's football future hanging in the balance, a person close to the decision-making process told USA TODAY Sports that athletics director Brian Mackin has given indications the program will shut down this week and that Mackin is working on a separation agreement from the university.

The person spoke on the condition of anonymity because the conversations were supposed to be private.
