I would like to point out that winthrop has scrimmaged one of soCons annual bottom feeders for several of the last few years. I know it is just a scrimmage but Wofford has beaten Winthrop the last three years pretty handily in these srimmages.

Uh what?

Winthrop has only scrimmaged them once, which was this year, in which they won all three sessions by double digits.

Like I've said, Davidson is a fly by night program which can only win a big game once in five years. WU continues to pick up multiple big victories year after year.

NOT TRUE.................. i know for a fact that they have scrimmaged wofford all three seasons, this past season wofford won 3 out of the 4 halves that they played.

however that is not what this thread is about. I wish that Liberty could get to the consistent dominance of the big south as winthrop has. That is what our coach said on day one. So props to winthrop for their dominance in the big sout. But the SoCon is a better conference and Davidson is a much better team. IMHO.

Curry will have a tough time shooting over the athletes from georgetown i believe. but i am pulling for them.

Uh, I know for a fact what I posted is true.

The socon isn't a better conference year in and out. The are basically the same. Davidson is a slightly better team this year, but the program is not at the level of Winthrop, year in and out. You can't debate the numbers and facts.

sigh...

Look. Winthrop is a good program. Has been for years. (As evidenced by their going to the NCAAs as often as they have) Davidson is coming around. Winthrop got hammered in the first round (although they hung with Wazzu in the first half), Davidson got the job done against Gonzaga. How about we stop with this whiny "my dad can beat up your dad" nonsense that has been going on about whether Davidson is better than Winthrop or Winthrop is better than Davidson. The fact is that BOTH teams are good and have shown themselves to do well in their respective conferences. So you think we can get off this and enjoy their second round game against Georgetown. Oh and one other thing...whether or not Davidson wins tomorrow...how about nobody start acting like "I told you so"...sound fair? I know this is meant to be good natured banter but Im just annoyed at this point.

Davidson is better then WU this year...thats all the matters...if anybody disputes that, then they are just blided by their biased opinions.....the past 10 years?? well, of course WU has had more success....but winning against top 100 teams in the regular season is completely different then beating a top 100 team in the tournament and you get more respect because, well, its a bigger game....from where I sit it is as simple as that......

Seriously, since when was winning a game against a top 100 RPI team a benchmark for anything?

LU beat Niagria this year and they were somewhere near the top 100. whoop-de-do! We can add that one to our trophy case.

Under normal conditions, people get excited about top-25 caliber competition. And in the NCAA tournement, most teams measure success by reaching the sweet-16. Quite a few mid-major programs have had very memorable journey's into the sweet-16. Winthrop is not one of them.

Good point Dox. I defend Winthrop on here sometimes especially when guys are saying they aren't good. But really they have a ton of regular season "upsets" or at least have won against "name" schools like Marquette, Mississippi St, Georgia Tech and Miami but the tournament counts for way more when it gets down to it. As far as history, Winthrop has a 10 year window of greatness but prior to that, they were not very good. All I am saying is that this argument is kind of pointless but I did want to add to it for some reason. Silly me.

They had two really good years that included a win in the big dance, but not a sweet-16 appearance. I give them credit for that.

However, the overstatements by winthropers about their continued prowess and imagined permanant status as top-dawg in the conference is out of proportion with the way things appear to be shaping-out.

At this point in time, I think that it's safe to say that Winthrop is yesterday.

Yep, so yesterday that we won the conference again

You've said the same thing for 5 years, do you actually believe yourself at this point :D

I agree with Realist here - The SoCon is really not that much better than the BS in Basketball and until someone beats Winthrop consistently again they are the best team in our league. I also think that Winthrop would have dominated the SoCon the past 10 years also. Davidson is good now, but they probably will slip back to reality once Curry leaves. Realist - I do like Curry though - was a little hesitant too, but after that Gonzaga game - he has proven himself to me:)

I'm also not sure if Winthrop will continue to be as good either with Peele at the wheel - As much as I despise Marshall, he's a good recruiter and coach and that void is going to catch up soon. The one thing going for Winthrop is the continued visibility in the tournament year after year and that they don't have football pulling their focus away from maintaining on top.

At this point I consider Winthrop to be Rasputin. I will believe their dominance of BSC MBB is over when they have been poisoned, shot, and shoved under the ice in the Niva river. Til then they are the team to beat.

30 for Stephen. 25 in the SECOND HALF!

We may be seeing a legend being born. 3 career tournament games, 30, 40 and 30, and he leads his team to the sweet 16.
