I'm guessing everyone in Rock Hill is in shock. You expect him to leave at some point, but not many saw this one coming at this point.

Actually I think most CCU fans would just as soon see their coach buzz away.

I wonder who WU will go after on such a short notice? Buzz? Cremins? or how about this one ... Jeff Meyer?

:o

Wouldn't that up the ante in our rivalry with them a few notches?

I am in absolute disbelief! I seriously don't know what to say. I feel so bad for Martin and Gaynor. I like those 2.

That made me laugh though.

I respond to that with this:
cougaraid wrote:There was a person on the CofCFans.com site stating that it was really close that Marshall may be the next head coach....that would be great for both CofC and Coastal....but I say as soon as the season is over we can Buzz so that we don't go through this again....sorry but the wins aren't worth this headache right before school starts.

That would be unheard of. Firing a coach because other teams are interested in taking him from you? It's like a preemptive strike. I like it. I like it a lot. Especially since there's no buyout option. But why hire him in the first place?

It was a great hire to begin with. The first year was good. He turned the program around. Then he started wanting more. It's like having a girlfriend growing up that you really like but at the same time you know if the quarterback asks her out you'll be kicked to the curb. Do you go ahead and ditch her to save yourself from the stress and worrying or do you just wait for the inevitable?

This is great that WU has a chance to go down the toilet. But on the other hand, I did enjoy winning with Greg on the sidelines. It didn't happen that often, but it was a great feeling watching him take an L. Best case scenario, WU stays an exceptional team and the rest of the BS (including us) steps up a few levels to compete. Worst case scenario, WU nosedives and the rest of the BS treads water.

I don't think WU will nose dive. They've tasted success. Without football, they can afford to pay pretty good for a coach. They'll get another good up and coming coach. The alum and everything probably won't let them get too bad. Maybe one or two down years but nothing more than that.

This year should be successful no matter what. It's going to be tough to knock off Martin, Bradshaw, Williams and Gaynor no matter who coaches. The next year (with or without Marshall) will/would be the reloading one.

And I'm not 100% sure on he is leaving. This could be a cruel practical joke, I hope it is, but I doubt it.

This is an amazing development in the Big South. Buzz stays but Gregg goes. That is wild. I don't think you have to worry about Coach Meyer coming back to the Big South IMHO. I haven't talked to him in a few weeks but he sounded way too happy to be at IU to think of leaving now before they even throw it up. Boy does this leave Winthrop scambling. They will probably just promote Randy Peele. At least for this season and see what happens. Randy is the former head coach of UNCG when they were in the Big South. I personally suffered a big loss vs his Spartans in the BSChampionship in 1996. They were just better than us that day. We had a great team and ended up getting back to the finals vs Chas So the following year and we lost again. The second one was more disappointing than the 1st because Chas So. was the 4th seed and only team that could even play with us that year was Asheville and they got upset in the semi's. Peele would be a good fit short term for sure.

I dont know about this season. It seems like it's all about continuity. If they promote an assistant for the season, I think they'll do almost as well. It'd be the same system same style same everything, except game time coaching. But that's not that big of a deal for one season. If they hire outisde the family. I think the team will suffer. That coach will impliment a new system immediately. And that's not good for established players to have to learn.

Scar hit it on the head, I'm pretty sure they would just promote Peele this late in the game. He's a pretty good coach in his own right anyway.

6:50 pm | Marshall leaving Winthrop for Charleston
DENNY SEITZ
dseitz@charlotteobserver.com

Gregg Marshall has accepted an offer to leave Winthrop and become men's basketball coach at the College of Charleston.

Marshall, who spent eight years (1988-96) at Charleston as an assistant to John Kresse, said he met with school officials last week when his family vacationed at nearby Pawleys Island.

Charleston fired coach Tommy Herrion last week.

Marshall has been a hot coaching commodity nearly every offseason since taking the helm of the Eagles. He had a 165-78 record and six NCAA tournament bids in eight seasons with Winthrop.

The news conference introducing him is at 2pm tomorrow.

As much as well love to hate this guy, I think he'll actually be missed in Lynchburg.

Great reading over on the Winthrop message boards. Leave it to Sly to help stir the pot, too.

Very Shocked to see Marshall leave. He will do well over at College at Charleston. Winthrop will still be a force to be reckoned no matter who the coach is.

In one of the links sub links on that board sly posted that all assistants will be asked to join Greg.....so it seems we may know shortly if an asst will pick up the job or not. Doesn't look like Greg is going to give them much time to make a choice.

What I know is GM will get 470,000 dollars per year for 6 years. Highest paid coach ever in the Southern Conference history. Press conference today at 2:00pm. Also GM and the players are pushing for Randy Peele to be the Winthrop coach. Others that are in line for it are Barclay Radebaugh, Jeff Meyer, Shaun Golden, and every other high major assistant coach.

Earl Grant is going to C of C and the other assistant Paul Molarni is staying behind to see what happens at Winthrop.

Big Shake up in the Big South! Sould be fun come winter time.

I've heard Peele too. I think it's a good choice and he's a good coach, and already in place. But I think Shaun Golden is a guy who could be exceptional for the long term. I wouldn't mind either of those, or even Radebaugh.
