The Flying Tomato is a serious entertainer. After having already secured he put on a show making a run that was jawdropping.

No real argument, Mallet. Other than his uncanny ability to connect to Madison Avenue, we really won't have to see much from him for four more years. But frankly that might actually contribute to making the rare appearances before our eyes even more stunning. If we saw it regularly it wouldn't be as special.

I dont know how many of you guys are figure skating fans (Id guess none) but I wanted to get your thoughts on how the men's competition ended up. Evan Lysacek of the US won the gold, Plushenko of Russia won silver. Plushenko has gone on record saying that Lysacek is "not a true champion" because he did not attempt a quadruple in his free program (of course Plushenko did). I watched and I thought that Plushenko was being an unbelievably sore loser with his comments.

Plushenko did execute a quad, but the landing was a little slow and there were a couple other minor flaws whereas Lysacek skated a nearly flawless routine that included mutliple triples and other jumps. However, Lysacek has handled Plushenko's and Putin's rants with class, and it does set the stage for a great showdown in Russia in 4 years, and there may be some home cooking in that judging after this little spat.

Bode Miller just won gold in the combined skiing. Especially cool because he was only in 7th after the downhill, which is usually his best event, but then he absolutely smoked the slalom.

I've been trying to find a comparison that would explain how we Americans would feel if one of our lesser neighbors beat us in our own national sport. With baseball no longer the national sport, I guess hoops losing to Canada on our home soil would be best comparison. But it is still not a great analogy.

Hockey isn't Canada's official national sport, that would be lacrosse. Now if we beat them at lacrosse, well then, Canada may then just decide to let us move our border about 100 miles north and stop with those silly accents.

(yes I know wikipedia isn't a source bit it is accurate on this one)... and lets be honest, with early numbers indicating that more than half of canada's 33 million residents were watching the game tonight, it was the most important event thus far in the olympics.

Sly I think your right on this one...of course, i'd expect we'll see our neighbors again in the medal tourny.... They are pretty darn good after all. What a great game.
