The "significant" part of the Big East was the fantastic basketball conference that was formed. Big East football has been a joke from day 1.

I'm excited about the Catholic 7 leaving the mess of the Big East and forming their new conference. If they land Xavier, Butler, Dayton, Creighton and one of St. Louis, VCU or Davidson, that's going to once again be a great basketball conference.

Come on. Junk like this brings nothing to the conversation. It certainly was a basketball conference but Pitt, Syracuse, Miami, WVU, VT, and BC at least have had great teams in the past and there was some tradition there. They've all since faded away for the most part but it's dumb to say that there was never anything there of worth.

+1. Big East football used to be pretty good. at least good enough to keep a BCS bid. now it is simply another version of C-USA which is pretty sad. The Big East was a great conference and i hate to see it fall apart.

I know this is beating a dead horse, but the Sunbelt should add 4 teams as quickly as possible. With the BE possibly losing more schools it will eventually trickle down to the Belt. To delay a decision shows either poor leadership by Benson or the presidents have no vision.

I am surprised the Big East has not moved yet to replace the 7, Boise, etc. ECU in all sports would be the obvious first choice. How about WKU ?

Andy Katz Blog at ESPN.com wrote:The remaining Big East athletic directors will meet in Dallas on Jan. 11 to discuss their latest moves, including the update on the television negotiations. Tulsa and UMass have been discussed as possible additions if the Big East decides to expand, according to multiple sources. Rice and Southern Miss were also tossed around. Meanwhile, the Mountain West expects to move on San Diego State by the end of this week, according to a league source. The MWC has to decide if it will go to 12 or 14. The MWC has interest in SMU and Houston, but SMU has let it be known to the MWC it has no interest as the Mustangs and Cougars are set to go to the Big East. UTEP desperately wants to be in the MWC, according to a source, and is on the MWC list. BYU is the first choice for the MWC but at this juncture the Cougars want to remain independent in football, WCC in other sports.

Isn't the Sun-Belt supposed to announce their expansion intentions this week? Or are they still waiting for the Big East dust to settle?

Not that I am aware of right now. Everyone is waiting to see how the Big East splits goes down and what MWC does out west. Nobody wants to make the next move unless they have no other options available. I suspect the Sun Belt moves occur after the Big East/Catholic 7 split is finally worked out. As mentioned above, the Big East football schools are likely to tap into CUSA once again and that likely will mean CUSA taps into the Sun Belt once again.

I heard from a guy who heard from a guy who read it on the internet that the Catholic Seven are looking for seven Protestant schools to form a 14 team Mega Religious conference.

no surprise here SDSU MWC heating up

http://www.cbssports.com/collegefoot...lks-heating-up
they should take UTEP and Tulsa as well, which would make CUSA more of an east coast conference.
"If San Diego State bolts, one option for the Big East is to completely drop the West Coast footprint that it started with Boise and SDSU in mind, according to a league source who said up to eight teams are potential San Diego State/Boise replacements."

Sarcasm or not LUalum, I doubt that is the sort of thing that will get anybody canned...maybe an editor (and the writer) getting a good talking to about doing better QC on their research, and issuing a correction, but not worth costing somebody their job

In my opinion that is the best comment on this board so far until it is replaced with the confirmation of Liberty moving to an FBS conference for all sports no offense.
