There is nothing Southern about the Appalachian-Americans that live around Phoenix. I grew up there and it took years to shake the accent.

Maryland is south of the Mason Dixon line. They are technically in the south.
Depends on who you ask and where you are in the state, people everywhere north and west of the Chesapeake Bay would say they are Northern, people that live east of the Chesapeake Bay would say they are southern.

They would be wrong. They are by definition southern. Anything on the southern end of this line here: Image
and yes that includes Oklahoma and Arkansas

I've actually heard DC & NOVA referred to as the Northeast by fellow residents. I cringe every time.

They have more in common with the Northeast than they do with the rest of VA

DC and northern Virginia could be considered a foreign country when compared to the rest of Virginia. I lived there for 6 years.

We've been here since July and are counting down the days until we move back home. This place has aged me 10 years.

And some people love it. I don't understand how anybody could love this place. Its soul crushing.

Preaching to the choir. 45 minutes+ to drive 13 miles is not my cup of tea but to each his own.

I think of MD as the south which is accurate. Living in Philly it dawns on me that I grew up pretty close to the Mason-Dixon line. But we couldn't be further from the south in terms of mentality. As for the NOVA debate, I lived there for several years and loved it. But visiting now, I couldn't imagine living there again unless I was a billionaire and had a helicopter to fly around. Traffic is RIDICULOUS!!!! But there are tons of fun things to do there, if you can get from point A to point B.
Geographically NOVA (DMV=DC, MD, VA) feels like the North and is so different than the rest of VA which was stated.

I do like that there is so much to do but I just wish it were easierto get around. You either have Metro which is the horrendous or you drive which is horrendous. If I could afford to live in the District or be a billionaire maybe that would help some, who knows!

I've heard Nova described much like NYC. AWESOME to visit. TERRIBLE place to live. My wife grew up in VA beach which i wouldn't consider NOVA. and my aunt and uncle live in Alexandria. So I have a little experience visiting up there. I will say VA beach is probably as far north as I'd ever want to live.

My eyes for the next move are on Baltimore, but truthfully I wouldn't mind moving back to VA Beach either. VA Beach/Hampton Roads is most definitely NOT NOVA!!!

Yes, and if you have one single appointment downtown your entire day is just shot.

What a wimp, he said something stupid and when it came back to bite him he ran. If by some miracle they actually won that game he probably would have been pushing people out of the way to rub it in the noses of every single person with media credentials before he went to burn the couches of every room on the floor of his hotel.
