It's a sad realization to know there isn't a better option in the entire country. Not sure why you'd be yelling at him over players like Chandler, Bradley and Besler making poor passes and being lazy with the ball in our back third. Nothing will knock us out of the group stages quicker than making one or two of those a game against the likes of Portugal and Germany. Altidore played fine compared to most... He uses his body well and is strong on the ball. When he has touched it the past two games he's consistently beaten opponents and drawn penalties. Yes, he needs to finish the chances he is given, but I think we will see him come into his own come tournament time.

" I dont feel any more confident in this US squad or any less hopeful because Landon Donovan being left out" Paraphrased.I know soccer is a different sport and the World Cup, because it only comes once every four years, is a different event. However, compare the future of any US sport to the present of that sport and tell me you would make the same choice. Isn't the point to field the best players the U.S. has to offer? I know he may have lost a step in the course of the last four years, but you won't be able to convince me that Donovan couldn't play a major factor in the play of the U.S. He is the most confident player the U.S. has ever produced, when playing on the world stage. What good is choosing a player like Julian Green to go and sit on the bench for the length of the World Cup vs. Donovan... a player with real experience that could come off the bench and actually contribute in a huge way. Green may be the future and the future may be bright... but Donovan is still the present, and I would argue the goal should be to play for the present and leave 2018 to four years from now.

If he is not a starter, does his personality/leadership/demeanor add to the team? Could he operate effectively as a bench warmer? Perhaps the spark that we anticipate from Donovan coming off the bench for 15-20 minutes is negated by the other 23+ hours that he is a backup.
Who knows.

So we look toward 2018 in some ways. In JKs opinion Green was a large enough talent to warrant having him set on the bench in 2014 to garauntee he would be there in 2018. Landon wouldnt have made us any less mediocre.
