But you're basing that all on just 3 point attempts/makes.. You can't say that the style of basketball they play doesn't resemble those other teams.. If that was you're point I'm sorry but even though VMI shoots a ton of 3's why is that the defining characteristic of their style? We trailed by only a handful at halftime this weekend but the second half they took far more 2 point attempts (layups & drives) than they did 3's- if they stayed with 3's UNCA prob would have won Saturday.. VMI may shoot a bunch of 3's but unlike other years they have guys that take what the defense gives them- even if it's 2's.. they're different from the past- believe me!!

why am I focusing on the threes? because it's a hallmark of the system, every team that runs it jacks up a 30-35+ threes a game, that's basically the minimum requirement for the system they play, according to coaches who have run the same thing in the past. The whole entire system is based on creating turnovers and shooting threes. Are you even aware of that at all?

it's completely different from waht the teams you mentioned ran. watch games from the teams, you'll see the teams you mention fastbreaking a heck of a lot more than VMI does. 48.19% of VMI's shots this season are three pointers, last year it was 49.18%, and two years ago it was 51.30%. So the percentage of threes they have attempted has gone done a measly 3.11% - so essentially they are still shooting almost the exact amount of threes in proportion to their total number of field goal attempts, which would not support your claim that they are taking a lot more layups. The UNLV, Kentucky, and Arkansas teams never had that high of a percentage. Why? Because they were going for layups and fastbreaking a lot more than VMI does.

You can point the finger at low shooting percentages for their losses this year but again, every team is going to have those games- right??

To change the subject a little from arguing over rather UNLV ran the same crap VMI does...

Forgot to address this earlier, but yes those games are going to occur, and as shown by VMI this year and the previous two wins, they rarely ever win games when shooting less than 30% from the three point line. To be exact, they are 4-17 against D1 competition in such games, that's a 19.05% winning percentage. Obviously that defense isn't putting them in a chance to win games when they aren't shooting well, which is what good defenses do. Kansas and UCLA, #1 and #3 (would have added Wisconsin, but all their box scores are in PDF and it would take forever to open them up) in adjusted defense efficiency last year on kenpom.com, were 8-4 when they shot under 45% from the field last year. 30% from the three point line, when taking 100 shots, would score 90 points; 45% overall from the field, when taking 100 shots, would score 90 points if it were nothing but twos, hence why I chose the 45% plateau.
