If he doesn't make the team after a performance like that then something is seriously wrong!

I hope he makes the team, too.

However, all preseason the PFW guys and Reiss have constantly paired Guyton and Redd in their analysis. Guyton had a monster game tonight according to the radio announcers I was listening to. In the first half, they kept calling his name as he was involved in many of the plays all over the field.

The good news for Vince is that clearly the Patriots need to infuse youth into the defense while they have the veteran LB'ers around to mentor the younger guys. Since Vince was a relative steal, I would say they try to put him on the active roster due to his "upside potential" (Pioli's and Belichick's favorite buzzwords for talent.) Because, he will most likely get poached from the practice squad if they try to sneak him on there. Due to Guyton's strong performance in the preseason, they may be looking at developing Redd for future seasons. (Many Patriot drafted LB'ers have been put on special teams learning the complexity of the system and biding their time for the future.)

Due to the injuries to O-Line this preseason, I also wonder if Sene has done enough to warrant a spot on the practice squad.) Well, we'll see on Saturday...

I saw the game from the third period on and Vince looked very good. Hope it is good enough to make the team. Grable? that played opposite him didn't look very good tonight. IMHO of course.

A nice wrap up of Vince's Battle for a roster spot!!

Vince Redd vs. Gary Guyton – Guyton has to make the squad. Ten tackles is pretty good, whether playing against Giants backups or Madden 2009. He’s also got the quickness to cover backs that the Patriots have looked to add to their linebacker squad. On the outside, Redd has shown surprising strength in containment and noteworthy speed in tracking down rushers. If he gets cut, another team will come along and scoop him up.

You know what? Maybe that’s not the battle. What about both these guys in favor of Eric Alexander? We’re looking at two rookies with platoon potential vs. a four-year special-teamer who hasn’t cracked the linebacker rotation. It’s worth consideration

As far as any possible surprises, I think Gary Guyton and Vince Redd could be in line for roster spots. Both are linebackers – Guyton inside, Redd outside – and they have shown speed and athleticism throughout camp. Even if they don’t make it, they could be candidates for the practice squad.

UPS AND DOWNS FOLLOW-UP: After watching the game again, a few alterations would be made to the "ups and downs". Koppen would be a down, as would Tedy Bruschi and Jerod Mayo for struggling to fill gaps in the running game. John Lynch also missed a few tackles, but made up for it with strong play on the goal-line. Rookie free agent linebacker Gary Guyton would be added to the "up" category for making the most of his opportunity (10 tackles, although a few came down the field), as would rookie free agent Vince Redd (draws a holding penalty, 5 tackles) and third-round draft choice Shawn Crable (5 tackles, 1 deflected pass). Rookie quarterback Kevin O'Connell should also be an "up".

Vince and Stephen both get the pink slips this afternoon. Hopefully somebody will grab them or the Pats sign them to the practice squad.

The New England Patriots made some striking moves to get their roster down to the 53-man limit.

Most surprising was their decision to cut CB Fernando Bryant, the player they signed to replace Pro Bowler Asante Samuel, who departed via free agency. They also cut LB Victor Hobson, who started 14 games last year for the New York Jets.

Also a bit unexpected was their decision to cut QB Matt Gutierrez and keep Matt Cassel to back up Tom Brady. Gutierrez outplayed Cassel, but the Patriots coaching staff obviously went with experience.

They placed T Oliver Ross on the non-football injury list and LB Bo Ruud and DL Kenny Smith on injured reserve. They released the following 14 players:

DL Titus Adams
CB Fernando Bryant
TE Tyson DeVree
S Mark Dillard
C Mike Flynn
RB BenJarvus Green-Ellis
QB Matt Gutierrez
LB Victor Hobson
LB Vince Redd
CB Mike Richardson
T Stephen Sene
DB Antwain Spann
DL Santonio Thomas
G John Welbourn

Vince will get picked up somewhere and I wouldn't be surprised if the same happened for Stephen.

Color me excited. Now I can continue to despise the pats in every way. Plus Vince will get picked up by a team that needs him, obviously. It's better for both parties.

both of them will...no doubt about it...from everything I heard Stephen was very high on the patriots and really appreciated the time some of the coaches took to help him and that the Patriots organization compared to the Rams' organization is like night and day...which is interesting...

both should find a place in the league soon....

hmmm, this is disappointing although I haven't seen any teams make a move on any cut players yet. And there are some good ones out there. Somebody can still steal him from the PS at anytime.
