Wow. Can't believe I missed this thread.

Yes, Winthrop was the dominant force in the Big South Conference over the past decade. Realist wants to keep on bringing that fact up as if he's putting somebody in his place, but nobody is disputing otherwise. We know that yall won 8 (or whatever) Big South championships over the stretch of the past 10-11 years. The three years that yall didn't win it, however, you lost to UNC-Asheville in the tournament. Going by your logic on the 2008 season, that means we were better than Winthrop in at least those three seasons.

Other points:

- I'm not too certain that our 2008 team was the best in our D1 history. Certainly in contention. Obviously I'm biased, but I think that our 2003 team has to get the edge just b/c we actually won the tournament and the conference was a lot deeper and stronger back then. We weren't consistent at all and had a mediocre regular season (tied for third), but we brought it all together when it counted. 2008 was one of the weaker Winthrop championship teams (certainly not as good as their 2003 team that we beat) and we weren't able to capitalize when it counted. The Pittman teams of the late 90s also have to be put in consideration.

- Is a Winthrop fan seriously trying to compare their school to UNCA from an academic standpoint? Just because you have an MBA program that every single graduate of UNC-Asheville (and any other four year institution) could get into? My friend from graduated from Winthrop and then IMMEDIATELY went into the MBA program. Didn't even have any work experience. It's a joke. Everybody knows that.

Average SAT scores:

Winthrop's 2007 freshmen class: 1053 winthrop.edu/.../Winthrop_University/viewbook2008.pdf
UNCA's 2007 freshmen class: 1154 http://www.unca.edu/ir/factbook/factbook2007.pdf

So before you post next time, just remember that there's a good chance that the UNCA poster that responds to your comments got at least 100 points higher than you on the SAT.

And 1154 is actually our lowest of the decade. We are back up to 1180 this year. Which is the same average as South Carolina's flagship university (USC). Laugh out loud at Winthrop and at the state of South Carolina in general.

While you're bashing the state of South Caorlina, please consider that UNCA ranks below at least two schools in the state in terms of the average SAT score of incoming freshmen. You can't just handpick the flagship school, and call it a day. Or, didn't they teach you research at UNCA?

Clemson - 1191
The College of Charleston - 1163
UNC Asheville - 1160
U. of South Carolina - 1105

The link you provided is from 2002. Yet you still criticized me for my research skills? I'm not going to individually research every school in South Carolina. I was trying to find Winthrop's 2009 SAT average (and could not) but saw a link that said USC had an 1180 average for this year. I compared the 2007 scores because those were two that I could find for both institutions.

Is Clemson the best public school in South Carolina? I assumed it was like our version of NC State, which isn't as good a school as UNC Chapel Hill. College of Charleston is a good school. I never said otherwise. It should be noted, however, that nearly half of the incoming freshmen at CofC this year are from out of state and 32% of the school as a whole. I imagine their averages are much higher than the in-staters that get into Charleston. Whereas instead of focusing on bringing in smart kids from elsewhere, in NC we try to make sure our smart kids stay at home.

Out of state percentages:

CofC - 32%
Clemson - 30%
USC - 13%
Winthrop - 11%

UNC - CH - 18%
NC State - 8%
UNCA - 11%

(In the effort of full disclosure, I have no idea what year these stats are from. It's the only link I could find that had them all listed at the same place.)

We don't have to offer in-state tuition to smart out of state kids to have higher SAT scores. Your two best schools from an SAT standpoint aren't even filled to the brim with South Carolinians.

Regardless, my main point: A UNCA student, on average, scored 100 pts higher on the SAT than a student at Winthrop. It makes zero sense for a Winthrop student to make fun of the UNCA education when there is a very good chance that he couldn't have even gotten into our school, while nearly our entire undergraduate population could have gotten into Winthrop.

Thanks, Manson. That's another belated Christmas present to add to the list: 3 conference losses, and it's barely January.

Some entertainment for your Tuesday:

We've been spoiled by having a program that was bar none one of the best in the nation for a decade. There are going to be down years occasionally for even the best programs.
Don't let the team's terrible play tear our wonderful family apart.

Technically HBU isn't reclassifying ... they are rejoining DI after a stint back in NAIA. But I recognize that has nothing to do with anything discussed here. I just don't get many opportunities to mention the Huskies.
