Yeah, that's not going to happen. IF the Big 12 expands and takes 2 teams, it's just going to start a small domino chain that likely won't affect Liberty. Simple reason is one of those teams will likely be BYU and the other Cincinnati or UConn. That'll mean the AAC decides to add one team. There isn't much difference between the AAC and C-USA these days, so the AAC could just invite an independent Army or UMass and be done with it.

Hard to speculate on conferences. Who would have ever thought:

Maryland to Big 10
West Virginia to Big 12
Syracuse to ACC
Pittsburg to ACC
Louisville to ACC
Coastal Carolina to where ever they're going
Notre Dame to ACC (except for football)

Um, most of these moves were a surprise to no one.

Maryland & the Big 10 had been flirting for a while before that move was made.

West Virginia was BEGGING to get out of the Big East when they were invited to the Big 12.

Syracuse and Pittsburgh were in the works for a while. In fact, I believe that Pitt (and I could be wrong) was nearly invited when VT, Miami and BC made the jump.

Louisville had been talked about on several occasions before they made the jump.

Coastal was a bit of a surprise but also are a natural fit for the Sun Belt.

Notre Dame also wanted out of the Big East for a very long time. Most thought they would go to the Big10 but the ACC wasn't that far-fetched either.

Yeah, you're wrong about Pitt. It was Syracuse that the ACC initially wanted but had to switch out for VT.

WVU would like out of the Big XII but there are no real comparable options at this point. The B1G (Penn ST and Maryland) or tThe ACC (Pitt) would be huge natural rivalries but there's 0 chance. Their next best option is some this side of the Mississippi joining the Big XII

You can wish that until the cows come home but in this day and age $$$ talks and that drove a lot of what happened in the major realignment dance the last few years

Actually the AAC is more on par with the Atlantic 10 in hoops. Top 8 in the Nation in RPI this season. A10 is 7. Sadly for me CUSA is in the 20's I believe. Although I spend a ton of time thankfully in the A10. CUSA is a one-bid league.

I could see a team like UAB getting added to the AAC or even an Old Dominion believe it or not. Both could compete in the AAC in hoops and have strong fan bases.

Ah, my fault. I was speaking from just a football perspective. I agree that ODU and UAB could compete in the AAC.

Apparently the non-football schools get to vote which doesn't help the cause for Idaho or NMSU. If they are cut loose, they actually make partners for us should we find a way into FBS land somehow some way.

Geographically, they don't make a good partner, unless I am missing something. Seems like they are just too far away to be attractive.

It would be in a scheduling alliance. Outside of splitting the Playoff cash, there is no other real reason to be in a football conference for indys. Add in UMass and perhaps Army & BYU and you can fill up the last half of your schedule with home & homes.

Yes, I am suggesting that independent status is a potentially viable option. Yes, I know it is not currently permitted by NCAA bylaws. No, I am not insane.

NMSU
Idaho
BYU
UMASS
Army
LU

There has to be a couple of more wayward misfits that can come together to 'reform' a conference

You're dealing with LU fans. The ones who think going Independent is a great idea

If we were to go independent , the key would be, who can we get on the schedule to come to Lynchburg. We would have to bring in some biguns.

That's why I mentioned the potential scheduling alliance. The front half of the schedule should be filled rather easily. Itis the Mid-October to Thanksgiving slots that are more challenging.

The March 10th Sun Belt vote is looming large in that regard. There seems to be a feeling that Idaho is likely gone and so is NMSU unless they were offered full membership in tandem with an Eastern school. Personally I believe they are both out on the streets in two years after the vote. Either way I don't see it having impact on our Belt candidacy any time soon. And I even believe they could let both schools walk and then call back NMSU if they were able to agree on an eastern school to add sometime before they officially depart in 2018.

FWIW I was at a coaching clinic this week and was talking with a coach from a school that was making a serious push at being invited to join the Big 12. He was fairly certain that a couple schools were going to be invited. Cincinatti with UCF or USF, or UCF and USF. He may or may not know, but I did not bring it up. I was just asking about how things were going with his new staff.

Cincy would be a good fit because you have a traveling partner for WVU. I'd still like to see them add BYU as well.

I don't know if it has already been mentioned but late last week JB had some people in showing them all the athletic facilities, on the downlow. Not sure if there's anything big to it, but it was kept quiet, and maybe it was for a reason.
